Requirements
  • A strong background in swim instruction and lifeguard experience.
  • The ability to adapt teaching styles to accommodate diverse learning needs.
  • Sound judgment in emergencies.
  • The ability to react to emergency situations through quick movements and strenuous activity and, on occasion, assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights.
  • The ability to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing, or walking for various lengths of time.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with children and adults.
  • Strong communication, time management, critical thinking, planning and organization, and customer service skills.
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
  • Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and Automated External Defibrillator certifications.
  • The ability to submit required course documents according to Red Cross procedural guidelines within the specified time frame.
Responsibilities
  • Adapt the teaching approach to match participants' experience and abilities.
  • Organize and direct assigned students' activities to provide quality instruction.
  • Ensure all class students are registered and on the class roster before class begins.
  • Provide personalized instruction for the duration of each session.
  • Establish positive public relations with parents or guardians and help them understand students' swimming developments and achievements.
  • Resolve simple public complaints related to swimming instruction and refer other complaints to the supervisor.
  • Enforce pool safety standards and facility operational rules for all facility users.
  • Complete and submit records and documentation of completed lessons to the Aquatics supervisor and the American Red Cross office.
  • Work with the Aquatics supervisor on an ongoing basis to improve and refine teaching skills for effective swimming lessons across age groups and skill levels.
  • Emphasize water safety and drowning prevention as the basis of swimming and water recreation.
  • Attend regularly scheduled departmental meetings as required.
  • Ensure that lifeguards are on duty during swim lessons.
  • Perform related duties as required.
