HCA expands radiotherapy capabilities with MR Linac launch. HCA Healthcare UK (HCA UK) has expanded its radiotherapy capabilities with the introduction of the Elekta Unity MR-Linac at The Harley Street Clinic, bringing personalised radiotherapy treatment to patients and furthering its complex cancer care offering. The MR-Linac combines a high-resolution MRI scanner with a linear accelerator, enabling clinicians to visualise tumours in real time while delivering radiotherapy. This approach, known as MR-guided and adaptive radiotherapy, allows treatment to be precisely targeted, even as tumours move or change shape during a treatment session. HCA explains the technology is particularly beneficial for cancers in areas of the body that are subject to movement during a treatment, such as prostate and central lung tumours. By continuously tracking tumour motion and adapting treatment accordingly, clinicians can deliver higher radiation doses with increased accuracy, HCA said, adding this may reduce the number of treatment sessions required for some patients while protecting surrounding healthy tissue. This acquisition of this image-guided radiotherapy represents a significant investment of £15m for HCA UK and marks the organisation's first MR-Linac system globally. The Harley Street Clinic becomes one of only a small number of providers in London to offer this advanced form of radiotherapy. Treatment will be delivered by HCA UK's multi-disciplinary cancer team, including consultant clinical oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists and radiographers, who work together on treatment planning and delivery. The service will be led by dedicated MR-Linac consultant, Dr Elena Moreno Olmedo, an expert in MR-guided radiotherapy. Dr Moreno Olmedo will oversee treatment sessions, working closely with the wider team to adapt each patient's radiotherapy plan in real time to ensure optimal precision. The introduction of the technology coincides with HCA UK joining the international Elekta MR-Linac Consortium, a global collaboration of centres focused on advancing evidence-based use of MR-guided radiotherapy. The consortium aims to optimise treatment approaches, improve tumour control and survival outcomes, and enhance patient quality of life through ongoing research and shared clinical expertise. Stockholm-based medical technology company Elekta has secured a loan of SEK 1.1 billion from the European Investment Bank to advance cancer treatment development. The funding will support research into radiation therapy and radiosurgery for various cancers and neurological diseases, including treatment software development. CFO Klara Eiritz said the financing provides flexibility to execute the company's long-term strategy whilst investing in innovations that improve treatment outcomes and patient experience. Most research will be conducted in Sweden and the Netherlands. The EIB loan covers up to half of the total investment costs.
Elekta and Boliden fall in irregular trading. The Stockholm Stock Exchange has begun Thursday's trading with an uneven trend. Mining company Boliden has entered an agreement to acquire Votorantim's 64.68 percent stake in Nexa Resources, a zinc and silver producer with operations in Brazil and Peru. Boliden pays with its own shares, meaning Votorantim will own 7.0 percent of the shares in Boliden. Boliden has secured bridge financing of USD 2.0 billion to support the deal. Medical technology company Elekta's adjusted operating profit in the first quarter rose to SEK 395 million, 24 percent higher than analysts' expectations of SEK 318 million. Revenue came in lower than expected while order intake was in line with consensus. The company reiterates its guidance for the current fiscal year 2026/27. However, the stock falls 3.1 percent. Consumer electronics chain Elon reports increased revenue and turns to operating profit in the second quarter compared to a loss in the same quarter last year. This is the second consecutive quarter with clear positive development. The stock surges 19 percent. Wind power company Eolus reports a sharp decrease in revenue in the second quarter compared to the same quarter last year. The operating loss decreased. The stock climbs 20 percent. Research company Saniona reports decreased revenue and increased operating loss in the second quarter compared to the same quarter last year. The stock falls 2.7 percent. Pharmaceutical company Bioinvent reports a sharp decline in revenue and turns to operating loss in the second quarter, compared to a profit in the corresponding quarter last year. The stock falls 5.1 percent. Foodservice company Nordrest increases revenue and operating profit in the second quarter compared to the same quarter last year. The stock rises 1.9 percent. Among today's analyst recommendations, SB1 Markets initiates coverage of several defense-related companies. Invisio and Mildef receive buy recommendations while Saab receives a neutral recommendation. Invisio rises 1.9 percent, Mildef gains 1.7 percent, while Saab is unchanged. Berenberg initiates coverage of engineering companies Sandvik and Epiroc, both receiving a hold recommendation. Sandvik is unchanged and Epiroc is up 0.1 percent.

$1.26M funding moves UOW cancer imaging research closer to clinical trials. * Education * 25 Aug 2026 1:09 pm AEST * Share World-first quantum photon imaging technology could help doctors see tumours more clearly during treatment A promising cancer imaging technology developed by researchers from the University of Wollongong's (UOW) Centre for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP) has moved a step closer to clinical trials after securing $1.26 million in funding through the Australian Government's Critical Technologies Challenge Program and signing a partnership with global radiotherapy manufacturer Elekta. The project builds on earlier research demonstrating the feasibility of Lantern, a new imaging system that uses quantum photon-counting detectors to dramatically improve the clarity of images used during radiotherapy treatment. The funding will support the next phase of development, led by Associate Professor Saree Alnaghy, Professor Susanna Guatelli and Dr Matthew Newall, in partnership with clinicians at the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre (NCCC) at Prince of Wales Hospital and Elekta. Dr Alnaghy said these partnerships have enabled rare access to a dedicated research linear accelerator (linac) radiotherapy machine in Australia, reducing the time to patient trials. Discover more "Having a dedicated research linac means we can rapidly test and modify the technology in ways that just aren't possible on machines that are also used for patient treatment," Dr Alnaghy said. "This is the first technology of its kind on a linac, and that puts us about four or five years ahead of other research groups and closer to real-world clinical testing." Government Radiotherapy relies on imaging to locate tumours before treatment, but current systems can have limitations in clearly distinguishing some soft-tissue structures in certain clinical contexts. Lantern is being developed to overcome this by using photon-counting technology to measure the energy of each X-ray passing through the body, providing far more anatomical detail. "Because our detector is more efficient, we can deliver less imaging dose and avoid additional radiation, which is particularly beneficial for paediatric patients" Dr Alnaghy explained. "This will also be valuable for cancers that are harder to visualise, like pancreatic, liver and prostate tumours, and small metastatic tumours in the brain." Head of External Research at Elekta, Wayne Lomax, said the company's partnership with UOW will help bridge the gap between promising research and technologies being used in clinical practice. "As radiotherapy moves toward highly personalised and adaptive treatment, innovations like this have the potential to significantly enhance precision and support the next generation of techniques," he said. Director of Radiation Oncology at NCCC and UOW Honorary Professorial Fellow, Dr Michael Jackson, said the hospital's role in providing space to commence trials will help the research move towards routine patient care. "A crucial benefit of this technology is that designed to work and fit onto existing, standard radiotherapy linacs so hospitals won't have to buy a whole new machine," Dr Jackson said. "In time, it will be used by many centres and potentially provide an additional imaging approach for radiotherapy centres."
