Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of current full-time paid experience in solar energy, building energy efficiency, construction, renewable electricity, clean energy, sustainability, or a related field; or education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade and four years of current full-time paid experience in those fields.
  • Knowledge of the solar energy industry and energy systems; modern methods, theories, and practices in solar energy; materials and techniques used in solar energy; solar design, installation, sales, and economics; building auditing, electricity fundamentals, and weatherization; solar project management; occupational hazards and safety precautions related to solar energy projects, solar maintenance, and operations; and the proper care and use of solar energy tools and instruments.
  • Knowledge of personal computers, spreadsheet software, and word-processing software applications.
  • Ability to select and organize curriculum content and apply appropriate instructional methods.
  • Ability to implement assessment tools for effective student evaluations.
  • Ability to obtain the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners Associate credential within one year of hire.
  • Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Vocational/Intern Certificate in Solar Energy Technology or immediate eligibility for an emergency teaching certificate.
Responsibilities
  • Assess students' instructional requirements and provide orientation and instruction in solar energy career and technical education competencies.
  • Teach industry-recognized standards, incorporate The Solar Foundation's standards into the educational program, implement curriculum-supporting instructional activities, and remain informed about technological advances in solar energy.
  • Train students in the proper use, care, and storage of hand tools, laboratory and shop equipment, and specialty tools and equipment; teach related safety procedures and maintain a preventive safety program consistent with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
  • Monitor student progress and assess skills using standardized measurements.
  • Develop internships and apprenticeships, provide school- and work-based experiences, and oversee students at job and school sites and while in transit.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory, secure tools and equipment, and dispose of instructional equipment according to district policies and federal and state regulations.
  • Prepare students to apply technical knowledge and skills in installation, project development, manufacturing, wholesale trade and distribution, and operations and maintenance.
  • Teach students to troubleshoot and diagnose problems using solar energy equipment.
  • Provide technical skills training for the applicable Pennsylvania Department of Education-approved end-of-program assessment.
  • Use varied instructional methods to motivate students and promote learning.
  • Participate in developing assigned students' Individualized Education Programs and implement the accommodations specified in those programs.
  • Provide and maintain an organized and safe learning environment.
  • Participate in professional development to remain current in technology, curriculum, instructional delivery techniques, and the solar energy field.
  • Administer district-approved industry-recognized certification examinations when appropriate.
  • Maintain classroom discipline.
  • Maintain attendance, grade, performance assessment, and other required records and reports, and communicate student progress to parents or guardians.
  • Develop student leadership, civic responsibility, and citizenship through Career and Technical Student Organization activities, and participate in related conferences and competitions.
  • Conduct Occupational Advisory Committee meetings at least twice annually to align the solar energy career and technical education program with current industry standards and obtain recommendations for curriculum, facilities, equipment, and safety improvements.
