Requirements
  • A Certified Medical Assistant I must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A Certified Medical Assistant I must complete an accredited medical assisting program.
  • A Certified Medical Assistant II must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A Certified Medical Assistant II must complete an accredited medical assistant program and have six months of Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant experience.
  • Certified Medical Assistants must hold an applicable certification through an approved certifying organization, including American Medical Technologists, the American Association of Medical Assistants, the National Health Career Association, MedCA, the National Association for Health Professionals, or the National Center for Competency Testing.
  • Certified Medical Assistants must hold a current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification.
  • A Licensed Practical Nurse I must graduate from an accredited practical nurse program and hold an LPN license in South Carolina or a compact state.
  • A Licensed Practical Nurse II must graduate from an accredited practical nurse program, have six months of patient care experience, and hold an LPN license in South Carolina or a compact state.
  • Licensed Practical Nurses must hold a current South Carolina LPN license or compact-state license and a current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification.
  • Applicants must be physically able to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, use both hands and legs, perform repetitive motions, qualify for respirator use, maintain corrected 20/40 vision, work in a latex-safe indoor environment, and lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Calibrate, clean, and perform scheduled maintenance of clinical and laboratory equipment in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department of Health and Environmental Control, and UMA requirements, and document the work.
  • Maintain and review patient records and charts, communicate pertinent information, and document test and examination results.
  • Communicate the plan of care to patients and develop formal patient education materials when necessary.
  • Maintain examination-room supplies, instruments, and cleanliness of the patient-care environment in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department of Health and Environmental Control, and UMA requirements.
  • Maintain timely patient flow and assist with scheduling appointments and referrals based on urgency and availability.
  • Screen patients for appropriate information and provide patient education based on diagnosis and treatment.
  • Observe, record, and report patients' physical and psychosocial conditions and reactions to medications and treatments to the physician.
  • Respond to and triage phone calls, call in physician orders as directed, and instruct patients regarding treatment or medication.
  • Monitor and distribute medications, including samples and controlled substances.
  • Triage patients and prepare them for physician examinations and procedures.
  • Assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments as necessary.
  • Instruct patients in the collection of samples and tests.
  • Administer prescribed treatments and tests as ordered by the physician.
Desired Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited medical assisting program with one year of patient care experience is preferred.
