About the job

Requirements
  • Significant software engineering experience, typically 5+ years, building and operating production systems, tools, libraries, or services used by many engineers, with strong API design, reliability, developer experience, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure experience.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or another general-purpose programming language, with strong testing discipline.
  • Hands-on experience building with large language models or other machine learning systems, including prompt engineering, fine-tuning, retrieval, or model integration, and an understanding of their failure modes and tradeoffs.
  • Experience designing and leading evaluation for artificial intelligence or machine learning systems, including defining metrics and methodology, building evaluation pipelines, managing test sets, and rigorously assessing model quality and regressions.
  • Strong command of evaluation concepts, including accuracy, precision, recall, F1, automated versus human evaluation, statistical significance, and the limitations of each approach.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with experience influencing technical direction across teams and mentoring other engineers.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the judgment to scope, prioritize, and sequence high-impact work with limited direction.
Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the design and architecture of core platform components and evaluation systems, making load-bearing technical decisions and being accountable for reliability, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
  • Help set the technical direction for how AI capabilities are built, evaluated, and deployed across the company, and define a platform vision that scales beyond the immediate team.
  • Design reusable abstractions, software development kits, and services for model integration, prompt management, experimentation, and deployment that establish organization-wide patterns and reduce duplicated effort.
  • Help define the company-wide evaluation strategy and methodology for AI capabilities, including automated metrics, human-in-the-loop workflows, test-set management, and benchmarking, and establish quality standards for other teams.
  • Build evaluation frameworks and developer tooling that are robust enough for production and accessible to non-specialist developers.
  • Establish observability standards for AI systems covering quality, performance, cost, and regression signals, and build dashboards and reporting that turn those signals into actionable decisions.
  • Drive engineering rigor through testing discipline, reproducibility, sound experimental design, and statistically defensible measurement of model quality.
  • Provide technical leadership on ambiguous and high-impact problems, scoping and sequencing work where direction is limited.
  • Mentor engineers and raise engineering standards through code review, design review, and leading by example.
  • Contribute to model and system governance practices, including model cards, system cards, dataset and test-set versioning, reproducibility, and responsible-AI checks embedded in the platform.
  • Codify best practices into tooling and standards adopted by hundreds of developers.
  • Track developments in large language models, evaluation research, and AI tooling, and translate them into pragmatic platform improvements.
  • Prototype and de-risk emerging techniques and tools, moving promising ones from experiment to supported capability.
  • Champion adoption of new platform capabilities across teams and lower the barrier for developers to use them effectively.
  • Keep the platform current and competitive without pursuing novelty for its own sake.
  • Partner with research, product, and localization leaders to align evaluation methodology with real-world quality and customer needs.
  • Influence roadmap and technical strategy beyond the immediate team and build consensus across engineering and product stakeholders.
  • Gather requirements from developers across the company and represent their needs in platform direction as a trusted technical partner.
  • Communicate technical direction, trade-offs, and quality standards to technical and non-technical audiences.
Desired Qualifications
  • Deep experience evaluating natural language processing, machine translation, or content-generation systems, including COMET, chrF++, BLEU, MetricX, and MQM-style human evaluation.
  • Experience with experimentation and observability tooling, data and test-set versioning, and rigorous benchmarking workflows.
  • Established practice in AI governance and documentation, including model cards, system cards, reproducibility, and responsible-AI considerations, at an organizational level.
  • Broad familiarity with the modern large language model ecosystem, including open and proprietary models, orchestration frameworks, and vector stores, and an understanding of their tradeoffs.
  • Experience supporting multilingual or localization-focused products at enterprise scale.

The evaluation assesses localization service providers across their current offerings, strategy and customer feedback, providing enterprises with an independent view of the market. Forrester's report describes RWS as bringing 'one of the field's clearest views of localization as AI infrastructure.' RWS scores 5.0 across 18 criteria RWS received the highest possible score of 5.0 in 18 of the 27 criteria evaluated. These include Vision; Innovation; LLM investment and modernization; Data, model and AI risk controls; AI search, semantics and knowledge enablement; Hyperlocalization and cultural adaptation; Context and data strategy; Regulated localization and compliance; Multimodal localization and Talent strategy. To RWS, the breadth of these scores reflects how localization is changing as enterprises adopt AI across global content and customer experiences. Forrester's evaluation also acknowledges RWS's 'superior hyperlocalization, AI-readiness services, context handling, and multimodal localization...' Forrester's take. RWS launches Tridion agentic platform for governed AI agents in enterprise content

RWS has launched a public preview of its Tridion agentic platform, enabling regulated enterprises to build and deploy AI agents within governed content workflows. The platform addresses a costly challenge: when regulations or specifications change, teams must identify affected content before updating it. Tridion Connect detects external changes and traces them to relevant content, whilst Tridion Agent automates preparation of proposed updates for human review. The system maintains audit trails and operates within existing governance frameworks. Early users report reducing impact-assessment time from days to hours whilst maintaining human oversight. The platform is built on Tridion's structured content system, used across medtech, pharmaceutical and manufacturing sectors for managing technical and regulatory documentation. General availability is planned for 2027. RWS is a UK-based AI solutions company listed on AIM, serving over 80 of the world's top 100 brands.

Analysis bycompanydata.comfound that the translation industry has stopped growing with the number of active UK businesses falling for the first time since 2015. The country now has 4,088 translation companies, down from a peak of 4,217 at the end of 2024.Last year was the first time in a decade in which closures outnumbered new arrivals, with 601 translation companies struck off the Companies House register against 546 newly incorporated in 2025. Powered by This year the gap is wider still, just 361 companies registered between January and mid-September, while 436 closed. In a 2024 survey by the Chartered Institute of Linguists, more than 70% of freelance translators and interpreters said their workload had fallen and half called the drop significant. In a Society of Authors survey the same year, 36% of translators said they'd already lost work to generative AI and 77% expected it to cut their income. What's left pays less, a UK freelance translator working through an agency gets around 7.5 pence a word for general text and that rate is still sliding. This year's European Language Industry Survey found every part of the industry agreeing that prices fell again in 2025, with no rebound expected. Across Europe the decline is steeper - 39,869 translation companies remain, but this is down 2.5% this year.Uttam Ramdaras, data analyst atcompanydata.com, said: "The gap has been narrowing for years and it's now closed.Until 2024, more translation companies opened than shut. Last year that flipped and this year the gap is wider still. You can't read motive from a register, but the timing is hard to ignore. "Anyone can get a usable translation out of a free AI model in just seconds and the businesses that used to do that work are coming off the register."
