Carnival cuts fuel use while rivals hedge, as it posts record $1.9B profit

Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings posted strong third-quarter earnings despite rising fuel prices, but each takes a different approach to fuel costs. Brent crude settled at $116.72 per barrel on Friday, a six-month high. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian use hedging, which involves derivatives to limit exposure to price swings. Royal Caribbean has hedged over 60% of its 2026 fuel, and Norwegian about 48%. Carnival chief executive officer Josh Weinstein favours using less fuel. He said unit fuel consumption is down 26% since 2019, saving about $700 million in 2026. Carnival spent $615 million on fuel in the quarter, Royal Caribbean $347 million, and Norwegian $196 million. Carnival expects $640 million in fourth-quarter fuel costs; Royal Caribbean expects $379 million.

Q3 earnings call US consumers "resilient", but Whirlpool shows strain as sales fall 8%

Early third-quarter earnings suggest US consumers are still spending, though not every company is benefiting. Royal Caribbean beat earnings expectations, with guests served up 9% to 2.7 million. Its shares rose over 8% on Tuesday. UPS beat expectations on earnings and revenue, with US revenue up 4.5% to $14.86 billion, and raised its full-year revenue forecast to about $92.6 billion from $91.2 billion. Coca-Cola beat expectations and lifted its full-year earnings growth forecast to at least 11%. Sherwin-Williams' net sales rose 7.9%, but it expects muted demand into 2027. Whirlpool missed on both revenue and earnings, and its North America net sales fell more than 8%.

Royal Caribbean earns $4.4B but burns $1.5B cash on $8B shipbuilding spree

Royal Caribbean reported net income of $4.4 billion over the past twelve months, yet its levered free cash flow was negative $1.52 billion during the same period. The company generated $6.79 billion in operating cash flow but spent roughly $8 billion on capital expenditures, primarily building and buying ships. The cruise operator carries $23.52 billion of debt against $876 million of cash. Despite the negative cash flow, investors pay 6.14 times book value for Royal Caribbean, suggesting confidence in the fleet's long-term value. At $277.74 on 2 October, shares were down 12.47% over twelve months. The company's dividend yield stands at 2.16% with a payout ratio of 30.88%, though dividends are currently funded by borrowing rather than surplus cash. Fifty-six hedge funds held stakes worth $960 million at the end of Q2 2026.
