Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certification in sterile processing is preferred.
  • Previous sterile processing experience is preferred.
  • Must meet the Department of Labor medium-duty standard, including exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, reach, stand, and walk during an 8–12-hour shift.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 60 pounds and pushing loaded carts weighing more than 200 pounds.
  • Must work with high-pressure steam, chemical, electrical, mechanical, bio-waste, body-fluid, temperature, noise, odor, and other environmental hazards while wearing personal protective equipment for extended periods.
  • Must understand and adhere to infection-control policies and procedures.
  • Must plan, organize, and prioritize time to maximize efficiency and meet deadlines.
  • Must maintain confidentiality of patient information.
Responsibilities
  • Retrieve contaminated instruments and deliver sterile instruments where needed.
  • Remove debris by manually cleaning instruments.
  • Operate and maintain decontamination equipment.
  • Inspect instruments and equipment to ensure patient safety.
  • Test equipment and report detected problems.
  • Separate and track items that have been cleaned and sterilized.
  • Remove all waste matter from transfer carts.
  • Organize, store, and maintain records of sterile supplies.
  • Check expiration dates on supplies.
  • Maintain a clean work area in accordance with departmental policies, procedures, and infection-control standards.
  • Operate mechanical machinery within the central sterile department.
  • Apply established policies and procedures when completing work assignments.
  • De-lint towels and sheets.
