Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalency is required.
  • New York Certified Peer Specialist Certification is required at hire.
  • Certified Recovery Peer Advocate Certification is required within six months of hire, and NYCPS/CRPA certification must be maintained throughout employment.
  • One year of health or human service experience is preferred.
  • The candidate must be able to confer empathy through lived experiences such as family or close friends; personal recovery is not required.
  • A valid New York State driver's license is required.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with individuals to develop person-centered recovery plans.
  • Link patients to social and other support services in the community.
  • Teach individuals and family members coping skills.
  • Support the application process for benefits.
  • Provide non-clinical crisis support after periods of hospitalization or incarceration.
  • Accompany individuals to court appearances and medical appointments.
  • Engage individuals with formal recovery support services.
  • Educate individuals and family members on various modes of recovery.
  • Articulate personal goals for recovery using personal recovery experience.
  • Assist individuals in recovery with creating Wellness Recovery Action Plans as needed, taking steps to achieve personal recovery goals, finding or establishing self-help groups, or finding other recovery-focused groups.
  • Use personal recovery experience to refer individuals or families to healthy leisure opportunities or helpful community resources.
  • Use and teach problem-solving techniques to individuals and groups, and lead discussions on methods to overcome common problems in daily living.
  • Discuss methods for overcoming negative self-talk and fears, and identifying signs of potential relapse.
  • Teach and role-model the value of the individual recovery experience and appropriate coping techniques.
  • Assist individuals in developing empowerment skills and combating stigma through self-advocacy.
  • Perform reporting and record keeping.
  • Consult with other professionals.
  • Provide non-clinical crisis response.
  • Recruit or encourage other Peer Specialists to pursue the CRPA credential.
  • Participate in program administrative and clinical committees as assigned.
  • Represent the agency in the community and promote agency values within the community.
  • Perform quality assurance activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Care starts with assessment and stabilization and continues with placement into appropriate services—such as inpatient treatment, outpatient counseling, or community residences—along with housing support, family education, and ongoing peer engagement to support long-term recovery. The approach combines clinical treatment with family-centered services and intervention options, all under one umbrella, to address both addiction and mental health needs.
