Requirements
- A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three years of experience and/or training in hospital neurodiagnostics, including EEG, EMG, evoked potential, and intraoperative monitoring, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certification or registration in at least one neurodiagnostic area—EEG (R. EEGT), EMG (R. EDT), or intraoperative monitoring (CNIM)—within three years after meeting ABRET, AAET, or ABEM eligibility requirements.
- Basic Life Support certification within six months after hire.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and basic computer programs used in the department.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, solve problems, demonstrate assertiveness, and interact with patients and physicians in difficult or sensitive situations.
- Customer service orientation.
- Leadership and organizational skills, including the ability to work independently and take initiative within established procedures.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients, escort them to testing rooms, and explain examination processes and procedures.
- Conduct electroencephalograms and other neurological tests, including evoked potentials, electrocerebral silence, nasopharyngeal, brain mapping, sleep deprivation, ambulatory, and long-term video-monitoring EEGs.
- Conduct nerve conduction studies and electromyograms, electrooculograms, intraoperative monitoring, and other neurological tests for inpatients and outpatients.
- Conduct regular and stat examinations in the Neurodiagnostics Department, surgery, the emergency room, patient rooms, and other locations.
- Assist physicians with specialized neurological tests when requested or necessitated by the patient's condition.
- Measure patients' heads and other body parts, mark electrode locations, attach electrodes and sensors, and verify electrode and recording-instrument function.
- Operate equipment and recording instruments to conduct and record testing.
- Monitor patient responses on recording tracings, oscilloscopes, and other electronic equipment.
- Observe patient responses and behavior during testing, record observational notes, and distinguish physiological artifacts from test measurements.
- Recognize arrhythmias, abnormal respiratory patterns, convulsive movements, and other signs of distress, and call physicians or emergency personnel when needed.
- Study data, prepare written reports, and enter test information, patient history, questionnaires, prior test results, and abnormalities into the computer for physician or health-professional analysis.
- Maintain clean and orderly patient testing areas; dispose of contaminated materials, change linen, clean electrodes, and prepare the area for the next patient.
- Maintain instruments and equipment in clean and functional condition; perform minor repairs, calibrations, and adjustments, and report the need for specialized maintenance.
- Maintain current knowledge of developments in neurodiagnostic techniques.
- Demonstrate or oversee on-the-job training for newly hired Neurodiagnostic Technologists and technologists needing training on new procedures.
- Provide excellent customer service when answering the phone.
