  • A high school diploma or equivalent General Educational Development credential is required.
  • The employee must demonstrate effective communication skills across departments.
  • The employee must understand perioperative practice principles, including aseptic technique, infection control, traffic patterns, and patient safety.
  • The employee must understand National Patient Safety Goals, specifically patient identification, when escorting or transporting patients and equipment.
  • The employee must understand appropriate specimen handling, including packaging, preservatives, tracking, and regulatory compliance.
  • The employee must be able to routinely handle highly technical service-specific equipment, including microscopes, lasers, and video equipment, and understand its operation, safety, cleaning, and maintenance.
  • The employee must be able to lift and carry more than 100 pounds and perform frequent bending, climbing, crawling, crouching or stooping, kneeling, pushing or pulling, reaching, standing, twisting, and walking.
  • The employee must work safely amid biohazardous conditions, radiation exposure, bloodborne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct and indirect patient care in the perioperative area under the guidance and direction of the registered nurse and in accordance with medical center policy and applicable nursing practice laws and regulations.
  • Assist with room turnovers, receptionist responsibilities, patient transport, stocking, cleaning and maintaining supplies, equipment care, patient positioning, and patient preparation.
  • Perform unit secretary duties, including telephone duties, appropriate message taking, and related tasks.
  • Assist the registered nurse with patient care, including lifting, turning, repositioning, obtaining vital signs, electrocardiograms, urine pregnancy tests, Accu-checks, and other assigned duties.
  • Escort or transport patients and equipment to various hospital locations as required.
  • Assemble, clean, prepare, and move microscopes, lasers, video equipment, and other equipment as directed.
  • Deliver specimens, cultures, and laboratory samples to appropriate locations within acceptable time frames as directed.
  • Act as a liaison with the hospital Biomedical Department.
  • Assist with room turnover, including cleaning and hazardous-material disposal.
  • Assist with restocking, cleaning, and maintaining supplies in preoperative and postoperative areas.
  • Monitor and maintain oxygen cylinders to ensure adequate supply for patient care in preoperative and postoperative areas.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of experience in a healthcare-related occupation.
  • Completion of the first semester of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse program.
