Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field, or a relevant combination of education and experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Three years of experience in a property and casualty claims environment, including experience reviewing policy coverages and exclusions, drafting coverage letters, investigating and settling property and casualty losses, and adjusting claims through litigation and trial.
  • Proficiency using computers and company-standard software specific to the position.
  • Knowledge of medical and legal terminology related to the work.
  • Knowledge of Michigan municipal liability.
  • Knowledge of best practices for adjusting property losses.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective customer service skills.
  • Ability to negotiate, build consensus, and resolve conflict.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet established deadlines.

Responsibilities
  • Verify coverage of claimed property and casualty damage.
  • Determine liability for covered claims through thorough investigation of the claim and applicable exclusions.
  • Analyze liability for claims pursuant to Michigan municipal liability statutes and case law.
  • Establish timely and appropriate reserves based on the claim profile, anticipated financial exposure, and authority.
  • Document claims with potential for subrogation recovery, including the amount of potential recovery.
  • Manage estimates and invoices for property, casualty, and automobile claims, and approve payments based on documentation showing the relationship to the cause of loss and legal liability for payment.
  • Conclude and close files after claim resolution, meeting internal performance standards and complying with state legislation to avoid penalties and manage expenses.
  • Negotiate settlements with attorneys or injured parties within authority at the earliest possible point to bring cases to final disposition.
  • Work with the manager on complex files or files above settlement or reserve authority.
  • Manage outside vendors to support cost containment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Stay current on changes in municipal liability statutes and case law to accurately interpret and apply relevant laws.
  • Administer complex claims and catastrophic exposures within authority, including claims from dedicated large accounts.
  • Exercise independent judgment to settle cases before mediation or litigation.
  • Participate in agent and client relationship management.
  • Assist in mentoring team members.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged.
  • Experience handling claims in multiple jurisdictions is preferred.
  • Bilingual skills are preferred.
