  • Applicants must provide evidence of current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider status valid for the full PNA experience; Basic Life Support training may be provided at orientation if not obtained beforehand.
  • Applicants must agree to attend an institution-specific orientation program.
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures applicable to the work.
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques for administering routine and special patient treatments.
  • Working knowledge of hospital sanitation, personal hygiene, and basic health and safety precautions.
  • Working knowledge of the organization and physical layout of the hospital.
  • Working knowledge of infection-control procedures and safety precautions.
  • Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting and transport stretcher and wheelchair patients to various hospital locations as required.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer or paper documentation tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and hospital staff.
  • Working knowledge of principles and practices of nonprofessional bedside patient care.
Responsibilities
  • Perform nonprofessional nursing duties in direct patient care under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Work one-to-one with an RN clinical partner throughout the 10-week experience.
  • Work with nurses across the Float Pool to gain experience with critical care, medical-surgical, pediatric, procedural, and oncology patient populations and nursing specialties.
  • Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for procedures and provide manual assistance as required.
  • Obtain and record patient data for medical records and inform the RN of collected information.
  • Administer treatment and personal care, including feeding, bathing, shaving, changing clothing, cleaning and trimming fingernails, making beds, assisting with ambulation, administering enemas, providing skin care, and assisting with bowel and bladder elimination; provide additional care to meet patients’ personal needs and comfort.
  • Reinforce teaching provided by RNs or physicians as needed.
  • Assist physicians and nurses with physical examinations by positioning patients, changing nonsterile dressings, and weighing patients.
  • Take and record vital signs and intake and output; apply ice bags; administer douches and enemas; report changes in patients’ conditions; turn and position patients; set up and feed patients; and provide fresh drinking water.
  • Perform finger-stick blood glucose tests after appropriate training.
  • Collect, deliver, and conduct routine tests on patient specimens.
  • Clean the assigned area and stock and replenish supplies and equipment as required.
  • Assist with patient admission, discharge, and transportation.
  • Follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.
