US chip industry faces 157,000 worker shortage by 2030 as Samsung, TSMC scramble for talent

The US semiconductor industry faces a critical shortage of up to 157,000 skilled workers by 2030, according to a McKinsey and SEMI Foundation report. This labour crisis affects major chipmakers including Samsung, TSMC, and Micron as they expand US manufacturing facilities. Only 3% of US engineering graduates enter the semiconductor sector annually, whilst 73% of chip employers report significant difficulty filling engineering roles. Companies are responding by recruiting aggressively in Asia, where talent pipelines are stronger and worker bonuses can exceed $500,000. Samsung is investing $35 billion in Texas facilities expected to create 3,500 jobs. To address the shortage, chipmakers are funding university programmes, with Purdue and Arizona State launching dedicated semiconductor degrees. TSMC plans to fill 6,000 roles at its Arizona fabs. Federal support includes $200 million for workforce development, helping over 80 community colleges launch semiconductor programmes since 2022.

US chipmakers face 157,000 worker shortage by 2030 amid fab expansion

The US semiconductor industry faces a potential shortage of up to 157,000 workers by 2030, according to a new report. This comes as the country experiences its fastest chip manufacturing expansion in history. Taiwan Semiconductor and Intel have brought new fabrication plants online in Arizona, whilst Samsung is set to open a facility in Texas later this year. Samsung has expressed concern about the labour shortage, which threatens production capacity needed to meet AI chip demand. The workforce gap presents a significant challenge as chipmakers require adequate personnel to support their expanding manufacturing operations. Companies and educational institutions are now working on solutions to address the shortfall.

Samsung's $700 Galaxy S26 FE tests Fan Edition promise amid profitability squeeze

Samsung has raised the price of its Galaxy S26 FE to $699.99, $50 more than last year's model, challenging the Fan Edition line's value proposition. The phone features Samsung's Exynos 2500 processor but retains last year's 6.7-inch display, 4,900-mAh battery, and 50-megapixel camera setup. WIRED gave it a 6/10 rating, citing modest upgrades that don't justify the price increase. The pricing decision comes as Samsung's smartphone business faces profitability pressure from rising component costs, despite growing sales. The S26 FE now sits just $200 below the flagship Galaxy S26, which starts at $899.99, whilst Samsung's Galaxy A37 costs $250 less at $449.99. The phone includes seven years of software updates and security patches with Android 17.

Samsung backs Nvidia AI chip rival Euclyd in $226M funding round

Dutch startup Euclyd has raised €200 million ($231 million) in Series A funding to develop an AI chip system designed to rival Nvidia's GPUs for AI inference. The round was co-led by Samsung, Somerset Capital Partners, the Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT, and Innovation Industries. Founded in 2024, Euclyd is designing processors with different architecture to GPUs, targeting AI inference workloads. The company plans to generate revenue through hardware sales to enterprise customers and licensing its intellectual property. CEO Bernardo Kastrup said Samsung's involvement brings expertise beyond capital, citing the company's memory manufacturing capabilities and supply chain knowledge. Euclyd aims to begin rolling out its chip systems in 2028, targeting thousands of enterprise customers by 2030. The investment reflects growing interest in alternatives to Nvidia's dominant position in the AI chip market.
