About the company

Amazon runs the largest online store in the United States and rents cloud computing to businesses and governments through Amazon Web Services. AWS pioneered renting computing power over the internet, and Amazon built its own delivery network to get orders to customers quickly. Shoppers buy from Amazon and from independent sellers on its store, and Prime members pay a subscription for fast free shipping, streaming video and music, and other perks. AWS rents out computing power, storage, databases, and AI tools so companies can run software without owning servers, and Amazon also makes Kindle e-readers and Echo speakers with the Alexa assistant. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, and it is based in Seattle, Washington.

What believers are saying

  • AI drives growth: AWS's AI and custom-chip sales each more than doubled, passing $25 billion a year by June 2026.
  • Stock grants gained value: shares hit a record in August 2026, making Amazon the fifth company to reach $3 trillion.
  • Ads are a third engine beside stores and AWS: they grew 26% to $19.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.

What critics are saying

  • AWS's lead is shrinking: in the June 2026 quarter, Google Cloud grew 82% and Microsoft's Azure 43%, versus AWS's 37%.
  • Job security has slipped: Amazon cut 30,000 corporate jobs in October 2025 and January 2026 to reduce management layers.
  • Expect five office days a week: Amazon ended its three-day hybrid policy for corporate staff in January 2025.

What makes Amazon unique

  • Most of Amazon's profit comes from cloud: AWS made 21% of sales but 60% of operating profit in mid-2026.
  • Amazon is America's biggest parcel carrier by volume: it handled 6.9 billion packages in 2025, more than the Postal Service.
  • Writing matters more than slides: Amazon meetings open with silent reading of a six-page memo instead of PowerPoint.

Jassy: Amazon has over 1 million warehouse robots, with far bigger impact expected within five years

Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy said the company has more than a million robots in its fulfillment network and expects them to take over many repetitive jobs. He added that Amazon will "always have a lot of teammates" in its fulfillment centres. Speaking on the third-quarter earnings call, Jassy said robots are improving cost, productivity and safety. He called their current impact "small compared to what it's going to be in the next five years," but gave no job numbers or timeline. Amazon reported revenue of $201.94 billion, short of the $202.31 billion consensus, and earnings of $1.89 per share against estimates of $1.97. Shares fell 7.30% to $225.99 after hours.

Amazon adds China's Kimi and GLM to Bedrock as Jassy says West wants Western open models

Amazon is adding China's Kimi and GLM open models to its Bedrock AI platform, chief executive officer Andy Jassy said on the company's third-quarter earnings call on Thursday. Bedrock now offers closed models from Anthropic and OpenAI, alongside open models such as Moonshot's Kimi K3 and Z.ai's GLM 5.3. Jassy also mentioned SpaceXAI's Grok 4.7. "The Western world is very hungry for additional open models that are Western open models," Jassy said, adding that he expects this to happen over time. He called Bedrock's potential "gigantic," saying it could one day rival Amazon Web Services' EC2. Jassy said customer inputs and outputs are not shared with model providers or used to train their models. He expects six to eight models to handle more than 95% of workloads within two to three years.

$2T wiped from Nasdaq-100 in October as AI spending fears hit Alphabet and Amazon

More than $2 trillion in Nasdaq-100 market value evaporated in October 2026 as investors questioned whether heavy AI spending will pay off. On October 30 alone, the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.9% and the S&P 500 dropped 1.8%. Alphabet shares fell more than 12% in one session, erasing roughly $500 billion, according to Reuters. The company spent about $51 billion on capital expenditures in the quarter, leaving roughly $9 billion in negative free cash flow. Amazon reported negative free cash flow of $42.4 billion for the 12 months ended September 30, 2026, against positive $14.8 billion a year earlier. It expects about $220 billion in capital expenditures for 2026. Microsoft remained cash-flow positive; Meta did not. Investors now watch AMD and Nvidia earnings for signs of strong chip demand.

Amazon's mixed-message AI memo leaves engineers uneasy as tokenmaxxing clashes with frugality

Amazon has published an internal memo on the role of software developers in the age of AI, written by Terk Terkowitz, a distinguished engineer. It was first sent to engineers and managers in September. The memo stresses customer outcomes and engineering judgement. It says work that gains nothing from AI tools is "a finding, not a failing." It also calls input metrics "deeply flawed," yet tells staff to use them carefully and warns that non-adopters are falling behind. In May, Amazon shut down KiroRank, a leaderboard that ranked staff by token usage, after people created junk tasks to climb it. The memo says this "tokenmaxxing" conflicts with frugality. Amazon reportedly announced another 250 job cuts this week. Meanwhile, AWS bills Bedrock and Kiro customers by the token.

Tech selloff wipes $1T off Nasdaq 100 as Intel plunges 30% on AI spending fears

Big Tech stocks fell sharply this week as investors worried that heavy spending on artificial intelligence (AI) won't pay off soon. The Nasdaq 100 dropped roughly 4%, wiping out more than $1 trillion in value, while the S&P 500 fell more than 2% on Friday afternoon. Intel's stock plunged more than 30% to roughly $62 after it gave a weak fourth-quarter outlook. ServiceNow fell 27% on Thursday after weaker-than-expected third-quarter results. Amazon, Alphabet and Meta also dropped after earnings; Amazon reported negative free cash flow of $42 billion. S&P 500 earnings growth has slipped to roughly 26% from 32% in the second quarter. Some investors are trimming tech gains to buy cheaper stocks elsewhere, though analysts such as Dan Ives remain optimistic about tech's long-term prospects.
