About the company

Sony creates and sells consumer electronics and entertainment products for a global audience. Its roots go from a Tokyo repair shop to a multinational company after adopting transistor technology and launching Japan’s first transistor radio, the TR-55, in 1955, and rebranding to Sony in 1958 to reach a broader market. Sony’s product lineup blends hardware and media experiences for everyday use, with a focus on reliable quality and recognizable brands. The company expanded internationally, becoming the first Japanese company listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1961, signaling its global ambitions. Compared with many peers, Sony combines a long history of electronics innovation with a broad entertainment footprint and a track record of global growth, giving it a wider scope than firms that focus on a single product category. Its goal is to be a leading worldwide provider of electronics and entertainment experiences that people trust and enjoy.

GTA 6 looms: Take-Two is the top video game stock pick as Nintendo and Roblox slump

Grand Theft Auto VI, due on November 19, is set to be the video game industry's biggest growth driver in the next few years. Global games revenue reached about $202 billion in 2025, up 9%, and Newzoo forecasts $214 billion in 2026. Take-Two Interactive, which makes the game, expects net bookings to rise about 20% to roughly $8.1 billion this fiscal year. Its stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 30, and the article's author favours it as the best way to profit from the launch. Sony is the game's main console partner, but gaming makes up under half of its profit. Nintendo, down 37% over the past year, faces competition for players' spending, as the game is not planned for Switch. Roblox, down 63%, expects third-quarter bookings to fall 14% to 18%.

Sony launches new ECM-W5 wireless microphone system.

Sony launches new ECM-W5 wireless microphone system. Designed for video production, combines 32-bit float recording, wireless monitoring and long-range transmission for applications that include interviews, events, live streaming and more. Sony Electronics has introduced the ECM-W5 wireless microphone system for video production, combining 32-bit float recording, wireless monitoring and long-range transmission for applications that include interviews, events, live streaming and other production situations where flexible audio capture is required. The system includes two transmitters and a receiver, with line-of-sight transmission of up to 500 meters. It is designed to maintain connectivity in congested RF environments and supports low-latency transmission for applications requiring real-time audio. Through a compatible camera's Multi Interface (MI) Shoe, 32-bit float audio can be transferred digitally and recorded with video in a single file. Each transmitter includes 64 GB of built-in memory for backup recording. Storage supports up to 90 hours of audio at 32-bit float/48 kHz or 60 hours at 24-bit/96 kHz. The transmitters also feature 3.5 mm microphone inputs for lavalier and other external microphones. The system supports 96 kHz audio recording and 32-bit float recording. Compatible Sony wireless headphones can provide cable-free monitoring and, with supported models, function as wireless microphone inputs. Up to four channels can be recorded in-camera for applications including interviews, panel discussions and event production. Timecode functionality supports synchronization across multiple cameras and audio recordings. The receiver can receive power and linked power control through the MI Shoe on compatible cameras, while the supplied USB Type-C adapter supports connections to compatible smartphones and PCs. Direct Bluetooth connection between a transmitter and compatible device also supports wireless recording. The transmitters are stated to provide up to 11 hours of operating time, and the system has a dust- and moisture-resistant design. "Video creators are working in increasingly dynamic environments, often with smaller teams and less room for error," said Yang Cheng, senior vice president of Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics. "With the ECM-W5, we focused on the real workflow challenges creators face: moving freely, managing multiple voices, staying in sync, and protecting every take, so they can spend more time focused on the story and less time managing audio." The ECM-W5, ECM-W5R receiver and ECM-W5T transmitter are scheduled to be available in November 2026.

Stability AI has raised $76 million to expand into professional music tools, with Sony, Warner and Universal participating in the funding round. The three major record labels also licensed their music catalogues for AI training. The company has released three audio models and AI music-editing software. The tools can generate instrumental tracks or shorter clips from text prompts. An upcoming update will enable users to guide music generation by humming a melody or beatboxing a drum pattern. CEO Prem Akkaraju and Sean Parker are leading the initiative. Parker previously joined an $80 million rescue of the company two years ago, when it focused on image generation.

Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding games broke even "but not by much," analyst says, as Sony drops Physint

Sony has reportedly cancelled Hideo Kojima's upcoming game Physint, despite initially promoting it as a major exclusive. The decision follows moderate financial performance from the Death Stranding series, according to Anilea Analytics. The first Death Stranding sold 5 million copies and generated $243 million against a rumoured $100 million budget. Death Stranding 2 sold 2.5 million copies, making $129 million on an estimated $150-200 million budget. Combined, the franchise achieved an 18-38% return on investment. Xbox has now picked up publishing duties for both upcoming Kojima projects, including Physint and OD. The move comes as Sony faces criticism for recent high-profile failures and cancelled live-service projects. Analysts suggest the cancellation reflects Sony's increasingly cautious approach to expensive game development.
