Requirements
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Physician Assistant, or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and current licensure or eligibility for licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
  • For Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioners or Adult Nurse Practitioners, the role covers adult patients from age 13 through death and stable chronic disease management or primary care.
  • For Family Nurse Practitioners, the role covers patients from birth through death and stable chronic disease management or primary care across the lifespan.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification is required before the start date.
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is required before the start date.
  • DHEC and Drug Enforcement Administration license applications must be started before the first day.
  • The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be assigned a primary supervising or collaborating physician and report directly to that physician.
  • The practitioner must maintain licenses, certifications, continuing nursing education or continuing medical education, and other credentials required by applicable policies and state law.
  • The role requires the physical ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, use both hands and legs, perform repetitive upper-extremity motions, and qualify for respirator use.
  • The role requires corrected vision of 20/40, the ability to recognize objects at close and distant range, work in a latex-safe indoor environment, and frequently lift, lower, push, pull, or carry approximately 50 pounds unassisted.
Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and manage inpatients on the Neurological Surgery Service.
  • Provide direct care to patients by taking comprehensive histories and performing physical examinations.
  • Evaluate and treat patients using history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope-of-practice guideline.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures in accordance with approved procedural privileges, skill, and proficiency, including lumbar puncture, central venous line placement, pulmonary artery catheterization, arterial line placement, endotracheal intubation, chest tube placement, bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, paracentesis, suturing and stapling, and removal of catheters, tubes, and drains as needed.
  • Initiate referrals to other health care providers and consult with the attending or collaborating physician.
  • Potentially serve as first assistant in the operating room.
  • Document and bill for direct care provided.
  • Use current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
  • Perform and participate in quality and performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Participate in and support the organization's accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities.
  • Maintain professional practice through participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Potentially precept students enrolled at the Medical University of South Carolina as advanced practice provider students and facilitate the learning of new team members.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least one year of Neurosurgical care experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is preferred.
  • Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification is preferred for caring for adult patients who are acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable, or technologically dependent.
