Poundland appoints three directors as sale talks reach critical stage.

Poundland appoints three directors as sale talks reach critical stage. 16th October 2026 Poundland's owners have appointed three independent directors to the discount chain's board as rescue talks intensify, with administration still a possibility. Majority owner Gordon Brothers and minority shareholder Pepco Group have brought in Andrew Kirkpatrick, Stephen Welch and Dominic Young to help oversee the retailer's future, as a decision on its sale draws closer. Kirkpatrick previously advised Steinhoff International, a former owner of Poundland, while Welch is a restructuring specialist and chairman of fintech firm FNZ. Young previously served as a director of The Spectator's former parent company. Gordon Brothers is currently reported to be considering competing offers for the whole business and parts of its store estate, with a decision potentially coming as early as next week, according to Sky News. The three directors will form a majority on Poundland's board, amid speculation that their appointment could pave the way for an administration process. However, sources close to the sale have offered conflicting accounts of the move, with some suggesting the appointments followed management's preference for a rescue deal backed by Irish property investor Martin Property Group. The group is understood to have proposed a solvent takeover that would preserve Poundland's remaining stores and workforce, while injecting fresh funding into the business. Meanwhile, Poundstretcher owner Fortress Investment Group has reportedly revised its offer to acquire between 200 and 250 Poundland stores, alongside its brand and stock. Modella Capital and The Range owner CDS Superstores have also been linked to the sale process. A spokesperson for Gordon Brothers said discussions remained ongoing with several prospective buyers, including those interested in acquiring the entire business and others targeting viable parts of the chain. "The board will now objectively evaluate these options," the company said, adding that it would consider the interests of employees, suppliers and local communities. The developments come amid growing uncertainty over the future of Poundland, which employs around 12,000 people across close to 600 stores in the UK and Ireland. Gordon Brothers acquired the retailer from Pepco Group for £1 last year, but has since launched a fresh sale process despite recent signs of improving trading. Shopworkers' union Usdaw has warned that an administration process could put thousands of jobs at risk, as the retailer approaches the crucial Christmas trading period. Tesco eyes Majestic as Fortress sale heats up.

Tesco eyes Majestic as Fortress sale heats up. 9th October 2026 Tesco is reportedly among the bidders for Majestic Wine, as owner Fortress Investment Group runs a formal sale of Britain's largest specialist wine retailer. Sky News reported at the weekend that a number of suitors are in the running. Their identities have not emerged. The sale process began several weeks ago, around six months after Fortress appointed Rothschild & Co to explore its options. No price has been disclosed. Analysts quoted by Sky said Majestic's recent performance points to a deal worth hundreds of millions of pounds, with completion possible in early 2027. Neither Tesco, Majestic nor Fortress has confirmed the process. A deal would be a rare big move for Tesco, whose last acquisition on this scale was the £3.7bn purchase of wholesaler Booker in 2018. It would also push the grocer much deeper into specialist wine. Fortress bought Majestic for £95m in 2019. Since then it has added wine bar chain Vagabond, bought out of administration in 2024, and premium distributor Enotria&Coe in 2025. The business now has more than 200 stores across the UK and Jersey and over 1,000 staff, plus its Majestic Commercial on-trade arm. Trading has held up. Majestic served almost 11 per cent more customers over Christmas 2025 than a year earlier, and it has committed £4m to its store estate, including four new openings in 2026/27. CEO John Colley has said the group is "continuing to invest significantly" in its growth plan.

Great Wines Direct owner challenges Tesco in Majestic auction.

Great Wines Direct owner challenges Tesco in Majestic auction. Thursday 8th October 2026 17:45 BST The owner of Great Wines Direct has waded into the auction of Majestic Wine Group, amid rival interest from Britain's biggest supermarket chain. Sky News has learnt that Komerz, a UK-based distribution platform, is among the bidders circling Majestic. Industry sources described Komerz as a serious contender to buy the business from current owner Fortress Investment Group. Komerz's involvement in the process pits it against Tesco, which Sky News revealed last weekend was among the interested parties vying for Majestic. Any deal is likely to cost a buyer several hundred million pounds. Komerz, which has previously said that it is undertaking a financing round valuing it at £500m, describes itself as an "AI-powered platform uniting commerce, marketing, data and distribution". Its acquisition of Great Wines Direct last year is understood to have given it confidence to make a competitive offer for Majestic. Founded in 2023, the company has also acquired businesses as diverse as haircare brand NOUGHTY and Glassbox, a brand and marketing consultancy. Komerz declined to comment on Thursday on its interest in Majestic Wine. A formal auction of the wine group kicked off several weeks ago, overseen by bankers at Rothschild. Majestic trades from a network of more than 200 stores across the UK and Jersey, employing more than 1,000 people. It was separated from Naked Wines, the online wine retailer, when Fortress acquired most of the business for £95m in 2019. Under Fortress's ownership, Majestic Wine has undergone an ambitious transformation programme since the acquisition, with new store openings, improvements to product ranges and an expansion of the brand's online presence all having been prioritised. The chain has opened more than 20 additional sites since 2019, with further openings planned alongside a strategy to grow its commercial business-to-business operation. Two years ago, Majestic swooped to acquire Vagabond Wines, a chain of bars, out of administration, for an undisclosed sum. It also operates the brand Enotria, which it bought last year. Through Enotria and its commercial business, Majestic Wine has become one of the largest wine and spirits suppliers in the UK, partnering with gastropubs, bars, restaurants, hotels and other hospitality venues.
