About the Job

Requirements

  • Strong demonstrated depth in FPGA hardware design for time-sensitive, high-performance applications such as image processing, high-speed data acquisition, or real-time networking.
  • Experience with FPGA device selection and architecture definition.
  • Experience developing RTL in VHDL and/or Verilog.
  • Experience designing high-speed interfaces such as CSI-2, GMSL/SerDes, Ethernet, PCIe, or comparable interfaces.
  • Experience with timing closure, clock-domain crossing, and resource optimization.
  • Experience integrating high-speed transceivers and external PHY devices.
  • Experience with FPGA tool flows such as Vivado, Quartus, or Lattice Radiant, and simulation tools such as ModelSim/Questa or equivalent.
  • Deep understanding of high-speed digital design fundamentals, including signal integrity, impedance-controlled routing, differential pairs, stack-up, and timing analysis across the board-to-FPGA boundary.
  • Experience with camera/image sensor hardware, including SerDes (GMSL, FPD-Link, or similar), MIPI CSI-2, and ISP integration.
  • Experience with Ethernet-based sensor streaming and sensor bridges.
  • Ability to develop detailed build assembly instructions and diagrams.
  • Hands-on prototyping and testing experience, including use of lab equipment.
  • Ability to lead technical initiatives and align cross-functional stakeholders without direct reporting authority, using empirical lab data to drive decisions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and determine when a design is sufficiently robust for production.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% within the United States and internationally.
  • Bachelor's, master's, or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of experience in Electrical Engineering.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods while working at a desk and computer; lift 15 pounds at times; read printed materials and a computer screen; and communicate through hearing and speech.

Responsibilities

  • Own requirements definition, part selection, schematic capture, layout guidance, and RTL architecture for a multi-Gbps mixed-signal PCBA that aggregates camera sensor data and human-robot interface functions into a cable interface routed across dynamic joints.
  • Carry the design from architecture through prototype, validation, and manufacturing release.
  • Generate and maintain block diagrams, schematics, RTL architecture documents, test plans, and fabrication and assembly drawings.
  • Design and validate high-speed digital interfaces, including CSI-2, GMSL2/FPD-Link/PoC, and 10GbE, with signal integrity, impedance control, and length matching.
  • Architect the board's power tree for proper power sequencing and low power consumption, and design for EMC, ESD, and thermal constraints.
  • Define FPGA device selection and architecture for sensor bridge nodes.
  • Develop RTL for CSI-2 ingest, Ethernet packetization, timestamp and metadata insertion, and camera synchronization for deterministic multi-camera and multi-IMU synchronization.
  • Own timing closure, clock-domain crossing, and resource and power budgeting within the FPGA; select and integrate high-speed transceivers and external PHYs.
  • Develop and execute validation plans covering board-level and FPGA-level testing.
  • Build test fixtures and use high-bandwidth oscilloscopes, protocol analyzers, and logic analyzers to validate latency, bandwidth, and synchronization requirements.
  • Debug across the hardware/RTL boundary, including link training failures, timing violations, ISP misconfiguration, and power sequencing faults, using first-principles root-cause analysis.
  • Own the component lifecycle through PLM systems and manage relationships with hardware vendors and contract manufacturers to support production scaling and design-for-manufacturability/design-for-assembly.
  • Collaborate with technical leads, project managers, software, mechanical, thermal, systems engineering, and manufacturing teams.
  • Mentor junior electrical engineers on hardware design, documentation, and troubleshooting best practices.
  • Drive project execution with leadership, program management, and engineering peers; define component roadmaps with product managers, systems engineers, and technical leads.
  • Lead debugging and root-cause analysis related to hardware and software defect resolution.
  • Align technical implementation and execution with company goals and build stakeholder consensus on critical design and compliance decisions.
  • Provide work breakdowns and time estimates to inform project execution.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with automotive or robotics vision systems is strongly preferred.

About the Company

Apptronik

Develops AI-powered humanoid robots for manufacturing

Apptronik builds Apollo humanoid robots powered by AI to work with people in manufacturing, logistics, and planned expansion to retail, healthcare, and home. Apollo robots perform physical tasks such as transporting components, sorting, and kitting, working alongside human workers. They differentiate themselves through a human-centered approach linked to the UT Austin robotics lineage and NASA’s Valkyrie, plus partnerships with Mercedes-Benz, GXO Logistics, Jabil, and Google DeepMind Gemini Robotics, with strong funding to scale production and training. Their goal is to scale Apollo deployments to enable safer, more efficient collaboration between humans and robots across multiple sectors.
