Requirements
  • Successful completion of a one-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.
  • At least one year of experience as a dental assistant.
  • Competency in four-handed dentistry and assisting with specialty procedures including oral surgery, periodontal therapy, endodontics, prosthodontics, and implants.
  • A dental radiological certificate is required.
  • Current Basic Life Support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • A negative tuberculosis test, either TST or IGRA, current within the past year; a chest X-ray is required if the test is positive.
  • Proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella, plus proof of Tdap vaccination.
  • Annual influenza vaccination, or masking during flu season if vaccination is contraindicated.
  • Completion of the hepatitis B vaccination series and bloodborne pathogen training.
  • Completion of required Veterans Affairs training, including privacy and information security, HIPAA, annual dental radiology training, and CPRS orientation.
Responsibilities
  • Set up and turn over operatories and surgery suites, pass instruments safely and efficiently, keep the operative field clear, retract oral tissue, prepare dental medicaments and impression materials, and assist with routine and specialized procedures.
  • Produce diagnostic-quality, accurately oriented and exposed dental images using radiation safety techniques while minimizing retakes.
  • Follow infection control protocols for operatory setup, cleanup, and imaging; prepare instruments for sterilization according to SPD standards; and maintain and document reusable medical equipment according to facility policy.
  • Remove sutures and periodontal dressings; obtain diagnostic and preliminary prosthetic impressions; remove, recement, and fabricate temporary crowns and bridges; perform coronal polishing; place rubber dams and matrix bands; and provide postoperative patient education.
  • Verify patient identification and participate in time-outs according to Joint Commission requirements.
  • Monitor patient condition during treatment and during and after moderate sedation, including blood pressure, pulse, electrocardiogram, and pulse oximetry monitoring, and adapt care to patient age and abilities.
  • Pour impressions and prepare study models, make final denture impression trays, and prepare bite rims.
  • Schedule appointments, help fill schedule gaps caused by cancellations and no-shows, assist the dentist with charting findings and treatment plans, and perform other administrative duties assigned by the Chief of Dental Services.
  • Provide courteous, patient-centered service and maintain confidentiality according to HIPAA and VA computer security regulations.
