AT&T CFO Pascal Desroches is retiring on 31 December after more than five years in the role and nearly four decades in finance. Jennifer Biry, a longtime AT&T finance executive and most recently CFO and COO of McAfee, will succeed him on 1 January 2027. During Desroches' tenure, AT&T separated DirecTV, divested WarnerMedia, cut its dividend, and refocused on telecom infrastructure. The company invested more than $150 billion in wireless and wireline networks, including spectrum. AT&T's annual dividend payout fell from more than $15 billion in 2020 to about $8 billion, freeing cash for reinvestment and debt reduction. The strategy has paid off for investors. AT&T's stock has returned roughly 65% over five years and nearly 95% over the past three years, including dividends. Desroches plans to continue serving on boards and advisory roles after retirement.
AT&T has launched Cricket 5G Home Internet, offering fixed wireless broadband through its 5G network to Cricket Wireless customers. The telecoms company has also partnered with LifeMD to provide eligible subscribers with free virtual healthcare visits and telehealth services. The moves aim to expand AT&T's bundled connectivity offering by adding home broadband and healthcare benefits to consumer plans. Cricket 5G Home Internet leverages AT&T's existing wireless infrastructure to reach customers who prefer not to install traditional wired services. The LifeMD partnership provides access to virtual care for more than 100 million eligible customers. AT&T operates as a major US telecom provider with a market value of approximately $183.1 billion. Investors will watch subscriber metrics in coming quarters, particularly Cricket 5G Home Internet adoption rates and healthcare benefit uptake.
AT&T shares rose 4.4% over the past five trading days whilst the S&P 500 fell 1.1%. Over the past year, the stock has tended to move inversely to the market, rising about 55% of the index's move on down days and falling about 50% on up days. The telecommunications company's recent performance has been driven by subscriber growth and price increases. In Q2 2026, AT&T added 432,000 postpaid phone subscribers and over 1 million Advanced Connectivity subscribers. Management raised wireless prices whilst reducing churn. However, over five years, AT&T returned 11.2% annually compared to 12.7% for the S&P 500, with higher volatility. The stock trades at 8.6 times earnings versus a 22.5 median for the S&P 500. AT&T expects to return approximately $18 billion to shareholders in 2026.

AT&T is undertaking its largest fibre expansion ever, planning to add 8 million new locations, with over 4 million acquired from Lumen. The company expects capital investment of $23 billion to $24 billion in 2026, with roughly $18 billion allocated to buybacks and dividends. The company has shifted how it reports subscriber growth. It now leads with a blended "Advanced Connectivity" figure combining AT&T Fibre, fixed wireless, and postpaid phones, rather than breaking out individual products. Management gained more than 1 million such subscribers in the second quarter of 2026. AT&T now positions its network infrastructure as essential for AI traffic workloads. Adjusted EBITDA margin reached 39.1% in Q2 2026, the highest since the company refocused on advanced connectivity. However, the stock has fallen approximately 7% over the past year whilst the S&P 500 gained nearly 19%.
