Researchers propose new method for quantum optimisation with constraints.

Researchers propose new method for quantum optimisation with constraints. Quantum optimisers efficiently handle problems with strict conditions on their solutions. Keio University and Hitachi propose Quantum Constrained Hamiltonian Descent (QCHD), a new method that finds optimal solutions while respecting defined equality constraints; it simulates particle movement within those limits without needing artificial penalties. Numerical tests demonstrate this framework outperforms standard Quantum Hamiltonian Descent when tackling circular, elliptical or multiple simultaneous restrictions, improving both speed and accuracy of results. The team created Quantum Constrained Hamiltonian Descent (QCHD), a new approach for quantum computers tackling optimisation problems with specific conditions on their solutions, these are known as constraints. Unlike current methods that use artificial adjustments which can reduce performance, this technique builds those restrictions directly into calculations. Numerical tests using circular, elliptical or multiple simultaneous limitations reveal faster optimisation and more accurate results compared to standard techniques, improving how closely outcomes match ideal minimum values. The Keio University and Hitachi team developed Quantum Constrained Hamiltonian Descent (QCHD), a new quantum computing approach for optimisation problems with specific conditions on their solutions, known as constraints. This framework builds upon Dirac's formalism, a mathematical way of translating classical physics concepts into the language of quantum mechanics, to construct an intrinsic quantum Hamiltonian operator. But does this new approach truly overcome the challenges inherent in constrained optimisation, and what are its limits as problems become even more complex. Quantum constraints enhance optimisation speed by 23%. Keio University and Research & Development Group observed a 23% average improvement in optimisation speed with Quantum Constrained Hamiltonian Descent (QCHD) versus standard Quantum Hamiltonian Descent (QHD). The tests covered circular, elliptical, and multi-constraint scenarios. Previously, traditional methods struggled to maintain accuracy while accelerating convergence due to reliance on penalties. QCHD's unique ability constructs a quantum 'field', allowing valid solutions to naturally exist by directly embedding constraints into calculations via Dirac's formalism, avoiding artificial adjustments that hinder performance. Further analysis showed gains up to 28% using only circular constraints, alongside approximately 19% benefits from elliptical scenarios. Even extremely strong penalty terms added to conventional techniques still altered the quantum dynamics compared to pure QCHD; residual effects dependent on embedding remained present. Whether this advantage holds when scaling up to more complex problems or noisy real-world conditions is an open question. Current validation focuses on simplified geometries and constraints. Quantum Constrained Hamiltonian Descent (QCHD) presents a promising new approach for optimisation under strict conditions, constraints, but current validations remain limited in scope. Tests focused solely on circular shapes, ellipses, and two simultaneous restrictions with specific initial settings. This raises questions about its performance against more intricate or unpredictable scenarios found in applications like financial modelling or materials discovery. Despite the limited tests, QCHD represents a fundamentally novel method; it leverages quantum mechanics principles to find solutions while strictly adhering to defined limits without common penalty adjustments. By adapting Dirac's formalism, translating classical physics into quantum language, Quantum Constrained Hamiltonian Descent constructs an intrinsic quantum 'field' where equality-constrained solutions naturally exist, eliminating reliance on artificial terms that can distort results. Quantum Constrained Hamiltonian Descent (QCHD) demonstrated faster optimization and improved concentration near global minima compared to standard methods when tested with circular, elliptical, and two simultaneous constraints. This new framework solves constrained optimisation problems by directly embedding restrictions into calculations using Dirac's formalism, avoiding the need for penalty terms which often reduce accuracy. Numerical comparisons showed improvements of up to 28% in certain scenarios; however, current validation focuses on simplified geometries. The authors note further analysis is needed to determine if these advantages persist as problem complexity increases. Tobu Railway & Hitachi's 90000 Series wins Good Design Best 100 Award 2026. Joey Stoate Published: 20 Oct 2026 Tobu Railway and Hitachi have announced that the 90000 Series has jointly received the Good Design Best 100 Award 2026. The train, which was designed, developed and manufactured by Hitachi for use on the Tobu Tojo Line, has also been selected for the 'My Favorite Design 2026: Good Design Award Judge's Selection' - a special recognition chosen by Good Design Award judges. Tobu Railway & Hitachi's 90000 Series has won the Good Design Best 100 Award 2026 (C) Hitachi Rail Designed in line with the concept of 'A ferryboat that connects the region, people, and the future: Watashi-bune'; the 90000 Series fleet entered operation on the Tobu Tojo Line on September 26, 2026. The train drew inspiration from the historical river transport culture that once supported the movement of people and goods along the Arakawa and Shingashi Rivers in the Tobu Tojo Line area. The train was praised for its design, which was inspired by a traditional Takase-bune riverboat. Judges stated that its exterior styling and interior environment 'successfully incorporates regional history and culture into a modern commuter train', and commended the project for demonstrating 'new possibilities in public transport design, leading to its selection in both programmes'. Hitachi's latest 90000 Series incorporates energy-efficient technologies, including full-SiC VVVF traction control systems, high-efficiency induction motors, and LED lighting in an effort to reduce power consumption by more than 40% compared with the existing 9000 Series trains.
