About the company

BlackRock manages money for pension funds, governments, insurers, and everyday savers, and sells the software it uses to run those investments to other firms. In 2009, its purchase of Barclays Global Investors brought in the iShares fund family and made BlackRock the world's largest asset manager. Its iShares exchange-traded funds trade like stocks and mostly track market indexes, while its private funds lend to companies and invest in infrastructure and real estate. BlackRock charges a yearly fee on the money it manages, and banks, insurers, and other investors pay to use Aladdin, its system for measuring risk and running portfolios. Larry Fink and seven partners founded BlackRock in 1988, and it is based in New York City.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Growth accelerated: clients added a record net $321 billion from January to June 2026, over double a year earlier.
  • Engineers are in demand: 97 of 315 open BlackRock jobs in October 2026 were in engineering or technology.
  • Private markets are the growth bet: BlackRock aims to raise $400 billion for private funds from 2025 through 2030.

What critics are saying

  • Its biggest rival took the US ETF lead: Vanguard passed BlackRock in June 2026, ending BlackRock's run since 2003.
  • Job cuts are routine: June 2026's roughly 200 layoffs were BlackRock's fourth round in 18 months.
  • Private lending is under strain: BlackRock's $26 billion HPS fund met about half of withdrawal requests in March 2026.

What makes BlackRock unique

  • Alternatives earn outsized fees: private and hedge funds were 3% of long-term assets but 17% of 2025 management fees.
  • Other investors pay to use its software: technology revenue, mostly from Aladdin, rose 24% to $2.0 billion in 2025.
  • Washington calls it in crises: BlackRock priced AIG's troubled assets in 2008 and ran Fed bond purchases in 2020.

SBI bullish $2.17B powerful breakthrough with BlackRock.

SBI bullish $2.17B powerful breakthrough with BlackRock. SBI Holdings, Startale and BlackRock signed an MOU to explore linking tokenized money market funds with regulated yen stablecoin JPYSC, aiming to build 24/7 institutional treasury rails and expand yen diversity beyond the dollar-dominated $300 billion stablecoin market worldwide today. SBI and BlackRock are working on new on-chain setups that could usher in a new way to move institutional cash in Japan with a link between money market fund tokens and a regulated yen stablecoin. On October 27, SBI Holdings and its subsidiary Startale Group entered into an MOU with BlackRock Financial Management and BlackRock Japan to look into connecting tokenized money market funds with JPYSC, SBI's yen stablecoin. The MOU is exploratory without a live product but brings together Japan's increasingly powerful consortium, the world's largest asset manager with $12.5 trillion under management, and the team behind Astar and Soneium. The timing matters. Yen stablecoins are clarifying regulatory pathways while tokenized funds bridge adoption thresholds, suggesting a move from pilots to interoperable plumbing. Table of contents. Inside the JPYSC and tokenized fund design. Tokenized MMFs are a type of fund share that can be tokenized transferred settled and used as collateral 24/7. SBI's JPYSC, a trust-type stablecoin issued by SBI Shinsei Trust Bank under Japan's Payment Services Act, distributed by SBI VC Trade, will be rolled out as a regulated settlement currency. SBI says that JPYSC was issued in June 2026 as Japan's first yen stablecoin tied to a trust bank, and that it is being issued under Japan's Electronic Payment Instruments law, which since 2023 limits its issuance to licensed banks, trust firms and registered money transfer operators. For BlackRock, the project means tokenization goes beyond dollars. Its tokenized fund BUIDL, also issued through Securitize, holds some $2.17 billion of Treasuries, repos, and cash, as The Block. Direct BUIDL-JPYSC integration is not confirmed, but the MoU will explore options for moving between yield-yielding fund tokens and yen for payments. Why yen diversity matters for on-chain finance. The global stablecoin market exceeds $300 billion, yet over 99% remains dollar-denominated, creating friction for non-dollar economies. Japan's Financial Services Agency has emerged as early mover, and SBI Chairman Yoshitaka Kitao called on-chain finance a unavoidable global trend requiring early preparation. The use case is institutional cash management. Corporations need to park idle cash in safe, yield-bearing instruments while retaining instant payment ability. If tokenized MMFs and JPYSC interoperate, a treasurer could redeem fund shares for yen stablecoins outside banking hours and settle invoices without wire delays. This reflects a broader pattern since SEC approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024. Institutions increasingly seek exposure through regulated, yield-bearing tokenized instruments fitting existing mandates. BlackRock's move with SBI, which has already started distributing Ripple's RLUSD in Japan since June, indicates that large managers are now constructing multi-currency rails rather than single-token bets, with yen diversification as the strategic focus. Open infrastructure and what comes next. The partners have identified three workstreams: technology/infrastructure, business/distribution and regulation/market development. They will assess technical settlement needs, distribution through SBI's network and BlackRock's channels, and on-on guidance. The collaboration is also "open", allowing for other financial institutions in Japan and internationally, suggesting a shared standard for the rails rather than a closed ecosystem. Tempo's expansion of its yield offerings to include BUIDL as collateral suggests a similar approach in the crypto space. Challenges remain. Interoperability through oracle infrastructure, compliance tooling to enforce transfer restrictions, and definitions around intraday redemption are needed. Japan's stablecoin regulations require reserves and audits that might limit scaling. If successful, the approach could speed up all yen-denominated markets and provide a template for non-yen local-currency stablecoins across Asia. For investors, developers, exchanges, and regulators, it would represent a shift from tokenisation as issuance to tokenisation as treasury infrastructure.
