About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of experience in electrical estimating, with a strong focus on switchgear, switchboards, and distribution equipment.
  • Ability to interpret one-line diagrams, develop detailed bills of material and takeoffs, and evaluate breakers, bus systems, metering, protection, and equipment ratings.
  • Working knowledge of UL switchgear standards, Excel, and estimating software.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple accurate estimates under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work in and around manufacturing and fabrication environments and review equipment, components, drawings, and manufacturing processes in field and shop environments.
Responsibilities
  • Review customer one-line diagrams, specifications, equipment schedules, drawings, and bid documents.
  • Develop complete estimates for low- and medium-voltage switchgear, switchboards, and distribution assemblies.
  • Identify mains, feeders, breakers, switches, busing, current transformers, potential transformers, metering, relays, controls, and protective devices.
  • Generate bills of material and estimate costs for materials, fabrication, assembly, wiring, engineering, testing, quality assurance and quality control, packaging, and freight.
  • Identify long-lead items, specialty components, non-standard requirements, and custom fabrication needs.
  • Translate one-line diagrams into physical lineups and determine section counts, breaker arrangements, compartment needs, and cable-entry access.
  • Evaluate voltage, amperage, interrupting ratings, bus ratings, enclosure types, and service-entrance requirements.
  • Determine main bus, vertical bus, neutral/ground bus, feeder sections, tie sections, and auxiliary compartments.
  • Identify missing information, technical conflicts, and design risks affecting pricing or constructability.
  • Apply UL requirements for switchgear and switchboards during estimation.
  • Verify component compatibility and account for required testing, NRTL certification, labeling, and documentation costs.
  • Coordinate with engineering and manufacturing to ensure proposed designs can be built and certified properly.
  • Request and evaluate component pricing, availability, and lead times from preferred manufacturers.
  • Evaluate alternate manufacturers and equivalent components to address cost or schedule issues.
  • Identify obsolete, restricted, or long-lead items before quote finalization.
  • Estimate labor hours for enclosure and steel fabrication, bus fabrication, component mounting, control wiring, assembly, testing, and inspection.
  • Coordinate with electrical, structural, VDC/BIM, and manufacturing engineering teams to evaluate heat dissipation, structural needs, and clearances.
  • Use standard 5K Power configurations, bills of material, and labor assumptions to support design-to-cost principles and product repeatability.
  • Build and maintain the 5K Power switchgear estimating database, including components, breakers, busing, labor, freight, and historical costs.
  • Track project results by comparing estimated and actual costs to reduce change-order risk and improve estimating tools.
  • Serve as a technical checkpoint for scope, exclusions, assumptions, pricing validity, and risk mitigation before quote release.
  • Maintain estimate accuracy, turnaround time, quote conversion, gross-margin accuracy, bill-of-material accuracy, and standardized product databases.
  • Interact regularly with engineering, manufacturing, procurement, sales, project management, and vendors.
  • Travel as required for vendor meetings, manufacturing reviews, customer meetings, or project support.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience estimating low- and medium-voltage switchgear, ANSI-rated gear, data-center infrastructure, and custom electrical assemblies.
  • Background with generator paralleling, main-tie-main configurations, service entrance, and specialized metering and protection systems.
  • Direct experience in electrical prefabrication or manufacturing environments with major vendors such as Eaton, ABB, Siemens, Schneider/Square D, and GE.
  • Experience with NRTL and UL listing processes.
  • Experience building estimating databases, ERP integrations, or product configurators.

About the company

Hays Electrical Services

View

Hays Electrical Services installs electrical systems for large construction projects across the United States, from hotels and hospitals to apartment towers and data centers. Many of its jobs are renovations inside buildings that stay open, such as busy hotels, an active hospital and an airport terminal, so crews phase work around guests and patients. Building owners and general contractors hire it for a project's electrical scope, from estimating and 3D design coordination through prefabrication, installation and later service calls. Its crews also install low-voltage systems such as fire alarms, security equipment and data cabling. Hays Electrical Services was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Hays says growth is creating jobs: it cites 146% corporate headcount growth over two years, from LinkedIn workforce data.
  • One Dallas data center posting adds incentive pay: Hays lists journeymen at up to $48 an hour plus $10 hourly.
  • Injuries have not cost crews workdays: Hays reports a zero lost-time injury rate for 2023 through 2025.

What critics are saying

  • Some field leadership jobs mean travel: Hays posts traveling foreman and superintendent roles listed as remote or nationwide.
  • Solar contracts put cash at risk: Hays' utility solar managers track contract penalties and retainage, money withheld until completion.
  • Apprenticeship means night school: classes meet on set weekdays from 5 to 9 PM, about 40 weeks a year.

What makes Hays Electrical Services unique

  • Power-ups have one gatekeeper: on data center jobs, Hays' Energy Marshal controls energizing and lockout of circuits.
  • Hays trains its own electricians: a four-year apprenticeship it co-created, registered with the Labor Department, admits only Hays employees.
  • Hays is set up for out-of-state work: the contractor reports licenses in 38 states.
