About the job

Requirements
  • Has led embedded, firmware, or systems engineers and wants to continue leading them.
  • Has a strong background as an embedded or systems engineer.
  • Thinks in systems and understands how the operating system, memory, hardware, and network interact.
  • Can hold a technical position with a senior engineer without writing code personally.
  • Has shipped software onto hardware that operates somewhere inaccessible for hands-on support.
  • Is comfortable with hardware timelines, board revisions, and problems that are still being defined.
  • Is eligible for a United States security clearance.
  • Has meaningful experience with embedded Linux in kernel space and user space, or real-time operating systems.
  • Has meaningful experience with C, C++, and Python.
  • Has meaningful experience with Yocto, Buildroot, or other embedded Linux toolchains.
  • Has meaningful experience with Docker, systemd, or other service orchestration mechanisms.
  • Has meaningful experience with IP networking fundamentals and system-level debugging on constrained devices.
  • Has meaningful experience with communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, and Ethernet.
  • Has meaningful experience with build systems, packaging, over-the-air updates and deployment, and continuous integration and continuous delivery for hardware targets.
  • Understands how hardware and software interact in embedded systems and how to manage that boundary with a hardware team.
  • Understands how systems fail under memory, power, thermal, and networking pressure.
  • Understands how to design software that cannot assume constant connectivity.
  • Understands what it takes to update, debug, and trust a fleet that cannot be physically accessed.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State to meet ITAR requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the team that builds the software running on the company's sensors, including the embedded Linux platform, hardware interfaces, model runtime, and deployed-unit reliability.
  • Own the embedded and edge software platform, including embedded Linux, the build and image toolchain, service orchestration, and software running on shipped sensors.
  • Own the hardware and software boundary, including board bring-up, driver and interface work, and the path from a new hardware revision to shipping software.
  • Own on-sensor model deployment, including the runtime, tooling, and pipeline that deploy models to constrained compute and maintain their performance.
  • Own field and deployment reliability, including over-the-air updates, fleet health, and behavior on hardware that cannot be physically accessed.
  • Own the embedded roadmap and its execution, tied to annual company goals.
  • Coach, develop, and hire a team of embedded software engineers.
  • Own the roadmap and delivery for embedded and turn broad direction into clear objectives the team can execute against.
  • Review architecture, maintain the technical bar, identify risks and tradeoffs, and surface them to the Head of Engineering.
  • Coach engineers on technical judgment and ownership.
  • Hire and interview embedded and systems engineers as the team grows.
  • Partner with machine learning, radio frequency, hardware, and mission operations teams to keep the device, model, and customer deployment in sync.
  • Own company goals and drive execution through ambiguity.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with software that takes advantage of hardware accelerators such as FPGA, DSP, or GPU.
  • Experience deploying machine learning models to constrained edge compute.
  • Familiarity with Rust, Golang, or SystemVerilog.
  • Familiarity with the fundamentals of signal processing, machine learning, computer vision, or related disciplines.
  • Experience with Electronic Warfare Systems, Radar, Software Defined Radio, or related domains.
  • Possession of a U.S. Secret or higher clearance.

About the company

Distributed Spectrum develops RF signal classification and localization technologies for defense use. Its low SWaP sensors are designed to be deployed on unmanned or manned vehicles, carried by personnel, or left in the field, and they provide real-time situational awareness with actionable alerts. The sensors collect RF signals and process them to classify signals and locate sources, enabling rapid, informed decisions in operational environments. The company differentiates itself through a defense-focused product line, compact hardware, and on-device processing powered by expertise in circuit design, signal processing, radio communications, and machine learning. The ultimate goal is to enhance defense forces’ operational capabilities by delivering reliable sensor systems and related services that improve awareness and responsiveness in real time.
