Requirements
  • Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in Florida.
  • Nurse Practitioners must possess AGACNP-BC, ACNP, or equivalent acute care certification.
  • Current national certification through AANP, ANCC, or NCCPA.
  • Basic Life Support certification through the American Heart Association is required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification through the American Heart Association is required or may be required based on the work setting.
  • Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure, including prescriptive authority certification when applicable, is required for APRNs.
  • Physician Assistants must hold current NCCPA certification, Florida PA-C licensure, a Physician Supervision Agreement or signed addendum, and CCF Credentialing Board privileges.
  • Excellent analytical, critical-thinking, clinical decision-making, and advanced assessment and diagnosis skills are required.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to use the electronic medical record.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated competency in managing complex patients and commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, evidence-based practice, compassion, professionalism, and excellent patient care.
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods, perform physical examinations requiring manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination, and occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to comply with required personal protective equipment, influenza vaccination or approved exemption, controlled-substance testing, and applicable Florida background-screening requirements.
  • APRN candidates must be graduates of an accredited graduate nursing program.
  • PA candidates must be graduates of an A.R.C.-approved Physician Assistant program.
Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical examinations on critically ill adult patients.
  • Formulate diagnoses, develop treatment plans, and provide ongoing management of complex medical conditions.
  • Order, interpret, and act upon laboratory, radiologic, cardiographic, and other diagnostic studies.
  • Assess and manage preoperative and postoperative transplant recipients in the intensive care unit.
  • Collaborate with transplant physicians regarding patient status, graft function, and postoperative recovery.
  • Monitor for graft dysfunction, rejection, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and transplant-related complications.
  • Manage immunosuppressive medication regimens and monitor medication-related toxicities.
  • Evaluate and manage infectious complications in immunocompromised transplant recipients.
  • Interpret transplant-specific laboratory testing, including therapeutic drug monitoring, donor-specific antibodies, and graft-function assessments.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans for hemodynamic instability, respiratory failure, renal dysfunction, sepsis, and multi-organ failure.
  • Manage ventilators, vasoactive medications, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, and renal replacement therapies.
  • Perform invasive and noninvasive procedures according to training, competency, credentialing, and medical staff privileges.
  • Place central venous catheters and arterial lines, perform endotracheal intubation, manage ventilators and chest tubes, and perform other approved procedures.
  • Coordinate care transitions between the operating room, intensive care unit, transplant units, and outpatient transplant services.
  • Participate in donor-organ acceptance, transplant readiness, and perioperative planning.
  • Facilitate family meetings and educate patients and families about transplant recovery, prognosis, immunosuppression, and post-transplant care.
  • Participate in transplant quality, regulatory, programmatic, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
  • Support transplant program growth through professional development and education.
  • Prescribe and monitor medications within applicable prescriptive authority, state requirements, and Cleveland Clinic policy.
  • Perform specialized procedures such as bone marrow aspirations, biopsies, harvests, blood draws, designated intravenous starts, spinal taps, thoracentesis, and paracentesis when approved and directed.
  • Participate in medical-team rounds and collaborate with nursing, medical, and other healthcare team members.
  • Refer patients to specialists and specialized health resources when appropriate.
  • Serve as a liaison among patients, multidisciplinary care teams, and specialty areas to ensure continuity of care.
  • Perform research follow-up studies and assist with data analysis.
  • Review records and treatment plans periodically for quality monitoring and patient outcomes.
  • Facilitate appropriate length of stay, discharge planning, and compliance with inpatient regulatory standards.
  • Provide patient education about diseases, treatments, medication and treatment side effects, hazards, and preventive health maintenance.
  • Work with a collaborating physician.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • ICU, transplant, surgical critical care, cardiothoracic, or acute care experience.
  • Previous experience in solid organ transplantation, surgical critical care, or advanced heart failure programs.
  • Strong procedural competency and interest in caring for highly complex transplant populations.
  • Two years of clinical nursing experience for APRN candidates.
  • Two years of related clinical experience for PA candidates.
  • Interest in multidisciplinary collaboration, innovation, quality improvement, and exceptional patient outcomes.

Cleveland Clinic's AI scribe cuts documentation time by 14 minutes per day, used by 5,000 doctors

Cleveland Clinic has rolled out ambient AI scribes to approximately 5,000 providers following a successful pilot programme. The technology records, transcribes and summarises patient-physician conversations, reducing documentation time by two minutes per appointment and 14 minutes daily. In 2024, 250 physicians tested five ambient listening products. Cleveland Clinic selected Ambience's AI platform, and within 15 weeks of launch, 4,000 clinicians were actively using it. The system is now expected to document one million patient encounters by August 2025, with physicians using it for roughly 76% of scheduled office visits. The AI adapts to medical specialties and requires patient consent and physician review before entering electronic health records. Chief Digital Officer Rohit Chandra said the technology has restored "joy" to caregiving by reducing administrative burden.

IBM, Cleveland Clinic and RIKEN simulate 12,635-atom protein using quantum computers

Scientists at Cleveland Clinic, RIKEN and IBM have simulated protein complexes of up to 12,635 atoms using quantum computers — the largest-known simulations of biologically meaningful molecules performed with quantum hardware. The achievement signals quantum computers are maturing into useful scientific tools for biology, chemistry and life sciences research. The breakthrough was enabled by a novel algorithm that optimises collaboration between quantum and classical computers, a framework called quantum-centric supercomputing. The team captured the behaviour of two biochemically relevant proteins roughly 40 times larger than what the same method could achieve six months ago, whilst improving accuracy by up to 210 times. The research used IBM's 156-qubit Quantum Heron processors at Cleveland Clinic and RIKEN, working alongside supercomputers Fugaku and Miyabi-G, to model molecular systems relevant to drug discovery.

Cleveland Clinic partners with Luminai to automate healthcare workflows after $38M Series B

Cleveland Clinic has partnered with Luminai, a San Francisco-based AI startup, to automate complex administrative healthcare workflows. The collaboration coincides with Luminai's $38 million Series B funding round, bringing total capital raised to approximately $60 million, with backing from Peak XV Partners, General Catalyst, Define Ventures and Y Combinator. The health system, which employs over 80,000 staff across 23 hospitals, selected Luminai to address administrative burdens that account for roughly a quarter of US healthcare spending. Initial deployment focuses on referral management, where Cleveland Clinic processes thousands of daily faxes requiring manual review and routing. "The goal is to reduce administrative burden and allow our caregivers to focus on patient care," said Rohit Chandra, Cleveland Clinic's chief digital officer. The partnership reflects growing pressure on health systems to modernise operations whilst managing workforce shortages and rising costs.

Cleveland Clinic performs first US surgery with Medtronic's FDA-cleared Hugo robotic system

Medtronic has announced the first US commercial surgery using its FDA-cleared Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system, successfully performed at Cleveland Clinic by Dr Jihad Kaouk. The robotic-assisted prostatectomy patient was discharged the following day. The Hugo RAS system features a mobile footprint with modular arms designed to address operating room scheduling challenges and infrastructure limitations. The system aims to expand access to minimally invasive surgery, which offers benefits including reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stays and decreased recovery time compared to open surgery. Cleveland Clinic, Duke University Hospital and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist High Point Medical Center are among the first US hospitals to install the system. The Hugo RAS system is available in over 35 countries. Medtronic plans to expand indications beyond urology into gynaecologic and general surgery procedures.
