About the job

Requirements
  • Experience owning production infrastructure at a startup or small team.
  • Ability to understand systems end to end.
  • Ability to work deeply with a TypeScript-heavy stack, including infrastructure written in TypeScript.
  • Experience running real services on a cloud provider and understanding the trade-offs between serverless services and long-lived virtual machines.
Responsibilities
  • Own the platform used by Scalar products, including services, infrastructure, and internal tooling.
  • Work on the documentation platform, including Markdown/MDX, OpenAPI and AsyncAPI references, two-way Git synchronization, and AI/MCP chat, from backend through user interface.
  • Build and maintain SDK generation that converts customer OpenAPI documents into type-safe client libraries across TypeScript, Python, Go, PHP, Java, and Ruby, including code samples and automated GitHub synchronization.
  • Contribute to the API Client, an open-source offline-first alternative to Postman that runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
  • Build secure MCP servers and AI features for chatting with APIs using the Vercel AI SDK, MCP SDK, and Vertex AI.
  • Operate Cloud Run backend services and multi-region Compute Engine managed instance groups for stateful, high-throughput services such as hosted documentation serving, realtime functionality, and collaborative editing.
  • Provision infrastructure using Pulumi in TypeScript, including secrets, networking, and underlying Google Cloud Platform services.
  • Maintain eventing and asynchronous systems using Pub/Sub with dead-letter handling, Cloud Tasks, and Cloud Scheduler.
  • Manage object storage and artifact pipelines on Google Cloud Storage for cached documentation builds, publishing artifacts, image uploads, and content delivery network delivery.
  • Maintain reliability, performance, and autoscaling across Cloud Run and regional instance groups as usage grows.
  • Build and maintain internal tooling, including the in-house command-line toolkit, per-service deployment pipelines, GitHub Actions continuous integration, and the database-backed feature-flag system.
  • Support observability and operational health using Sentry, structured logging with pino and Better Stack, and the analytics pipeline into BigQuery.
  • Contribute to frontend development as well as backend service management, and lead new feature development in either area when asked.
  • Contribute where needed as part of a small team.
Desired Qualifications
  • Depth in Google Cloud Platform, particularly Cloud Run, Compute Engine, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL, Google Cloud Storage, Secret Manager, and Artifact Registry.
  • Experience with Pulumi or infrastructure-as-code in a programming language rather than HCL.
  • Experience with multi-region deployment, autoscaling, and rolling updates.
  • A track record of building internal developer tooling that improves team efficiency.
  • Experience with MongoDB and PostgreSQL, including pgvector.
  • Preference for building clients and tooling in-house and reducing external dependencies.
  • A background in developer tools or APIs, and familiarity with OpenAPI.

About the company

Scalar is an open-source API platform focused on OpenAPI specifications. It provides tools to author, validate, test, and share API documentation, and to generate an API client from the spec. The platform keeps the OpenAPI document at the center of development and offers interactive, customizable docs published through a hosted service called Scalar Docs, with a free tier and paid options. Its open-core model combines openly available tools with a managed publishing service to help developers publish and maintain API documentation more efficiently.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • September 1, 2026 pricing adds Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers with clear expansion paths.
  • March 17, 2026 Agent MCP servers and March 25 OAuth support target AI-native developer workflows.
  • August 2026 blog says only ten developers donated $21,232 to open-source maintainers.

What critics are saying

  • Free self-hosted renderer and open-source code let teams bypass Scalar Docs entirely.
  • OpenAPI, AsyncAPI, and MCP expansion creates execution risk against ReadMe, Redocly, and Swagger.
  • If AI-doc tooling standardizes elsewhere, hosted docs revenue stalls and open-source cannibalizes paid plans.

What makes Scalar unique

  • Scalar bundles OpenAPI docs, API client, SDKs, and MCP servers in one platform.
  • Its MIT-licensed renderer keeps self-hosting free while monetizing Scalar Docs hosting.
  • September 2026 release adds localization, AsyncAPI parity, and CSP support for enterprise adoption.
