Requirements
  • Be licensed in the state as a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine with specialization in psychiatry.
  • Be a board-eligible physician.
  • Graduate from an accredited college or university and medical school.
  • Successfully complete a graduate medical education-accredited residency and/or fellowship program.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to resolve conflict.
  • Be able to organize and plan activities, formulate policies, delegate responsibility, and make decisions affecting diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Be able to communicate with patients and employees through written, verbal, and auditory skills.
  • Be physically and mentally able to perform the job duties, including lifting a minimum of 20 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Attend patients and assist with patient coverage at assigned locations, levels of care, or virtual sites within the scope of physician licensure.
  • Conduct medication management sessions with patients.
  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations and assessments.
  • Conduct histories and physical examinations.
  • Create patient treatment plans and manage updates.
  • Provide patient and family education.
  • Participate in team and unit meetings.
  • Create discharge plans.
  • Collaborate with nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
  • Provide oversight of medical residents and fellows working on the unit.
  • Participate in the established call schedule.
  • Complete charting and documentation within 24 hours.
  • Serve as attending physician for assigned units.
  • Round on patients as required.
  • Complete emergency detentions, including required paperwork and interactions with regulatory agencies.
  • Provide medication education to nursing staff.
  • Inservice the treatment team as needed.
  • Meet patient productivity standards.
  • Complete coding and documentation in compliance with organizational expectations.
  • Attend Medical Staff and Medical Staff Executive Committee meetings.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining positive working relationships with contracted payors.
  • Review denials of service from payors for medical reasons.
  • Interface with referring parties, psychiatrists, and primary care physicians to coordinate care and aftercare.
  • Market the employer through off-site meetings and marketing activities as appropriate.
  • Review potential admissions, pending cases, and declined admissions to ensure policy execution and compliance with the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act.
  • Serve as an advocate for the organization.
  • Provide support, information, education, and services.
  • Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities and meetings.
  • Identify new program development opportunities for patient care services and the employer.
  • Participate in community education about behavioral health issues.
  • Provide initial placement recommendations based on admitting criteria, clinical parameters, medical history, and screening documentation.
  • Review and evaluate admission screenings to determine the appropriate program, level of care, and mode of delivery.
  • Refer to and work with other departments and agencies as needed.
  • Report pertinent data to the attending provider and other team members.
  • Prioritize situations requiring immediate attention versus postponement.
  • Communicate difficult problems immediately to referring parties.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with medical staff and other providers for ongoing case review and communication.
Desired Qualifications
  • Board certification is preferred.
  • Previous work or moonlighting experience as a psychiatrist in another licensed hospital is preferred.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience in a behavioral health organization is preferred.
  • Experience with process improvement implementation is preferred.
