About the company

Richemont is a Swiss-based holding company that owns a collection of luxury brands, including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and IWC Schaffhausen. It operates by acquiring and nurturing iconic luxury maisons with rich histories, then leveraging their heritage to create premium jewelry, watches, and accessories sold worldwide through its brands and retail networks. Unlike diversified conglomerates that mix many non-luxury businesses, Richemont focuses exclusively on high-end goods and has deliberately shifted away from other interests (like tobacco) to sharpen its luxury focus. Its goal is to build a global luxury powerhouse by growing its brands, expanding across geographies, and maintaining control over premium product sourcing, design, and distribution.

What believers are saying

  • Richemont posted 20% constant-currency sales growth in Q1 FY2027, driven by jewellery.
  • The July 2026 buyback launch and €9.1 billion net cash strengthen shareholder returns and flexibility.
  • Scandicci’s €12 million expansion adds capacity, hires 300 workers, and deepens vertical integration.

What critics are saying

  • China retail sales rose 0.4% in August 2026, and Richemont depends heavily on that market.
  • Specialist Watchmakers remain weaker than jewellery, exposing Richemont to category imbalance if demand softens.
  • Cartier carries the profit engine; any prolonged slowdown there would hit cash flow and valuation fast.

What makes Richemont unique

  • Cartier, Van Cleef and Buccellati give Richemont unparalleled jewellery pricing power.
  • Richemont controls craftsmanship-heavy Maisons and in-house leather production, including Scandicci’s expanded PRF site.
  • Family control under Johann Rupert supports long-term succession and capital allocation discipline.

Cartier owner weighs De Beers bid with Signet.

Cartier owner weighs De Beers bid with Signet. Cartier owner Richemont and U.S. jewellery retailer Signet Jewelers (NYSE: SIG) are discussing joining a consortium bidding for Anglo American's (LSE: AAL) controlling stake in De Beers, Reuters and Bloomberg reported Thursday. Anglo is selling its 85% holding in the diamond producer, with Botswana owning the rest. A potential deal has been reported at about $1 billion (C$1.43 billion), below De Beers' $2.3-billion carrying value following three writedowns in as many years. The business recorded a $511-million underlying loss before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization on revenue of $3.5 billion last year, Anglo's results show. The prospective investors are discussing joining Global Diamond Consortium, led by former De Beers CEO Gareth Penny. Talks involving Richemont are advanced, although there's no guarantee it will join, Bloomberg reported. The size of either company's potential investment hasn't been disclosed. Their participation would bring major sellers of finished jewellery into the ownership of a struggling supplier of rough diamonds. De Beers has faced weaker Chinese demand and competition from lab-grown stones, while an investment would give the retailers greater influence over their natural-diamond supply chain. Signet and De Beers already launched a joint marketing campaign in 2024 to promote natural diamonds to younger U.S. couples. Bidders. Global Diamond Consortium emerged as the preferred bidder in July, according to Botswana's government. The group includes participation from the governments of Namibia and Angola and diamond manufacturers. It's nearing an agreement that could increase Botswana's holding to about 25%, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters said it couldn't independently verify that report. Botswana remains central to any transaction because it holds a right of first refusal and hasn't said whether it will exercise it. The country supplied about 70% of De Beers' rough-diamond production last year. A presidency spokesperson said Tuesday the government wouldn't comment until a transaction had been concluded and signed, Reuters reported. Officials said this summer they expected completion in the fourth quarter. Richemont, controlled by South African billionaire Johann Rupert, owns Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and watchmaker Vacheron Constantin. Signet's brands include Kay, Zales, Jared and Canada's Peoples Jewellers. Investment by jewellery interests in mining isn't unprecedented: Graff Investments holds 15% of Gem Diamonds (LSE: GEMD), which operates Lesotho's Letšeng mine. Anglo put De Beers up for sale in May 2024 as part of a broader restructuring after fending off BHP's (ASX: BHP) takeover approach. Independent diamond analyst Paul Zimnisky told MINING.COM earlier this year that a buyer with sufficient capital and strong execution could revive the business, with the loss of competing independent producers and sanctions on Russian diamonds strengthening its longer-term supply position.

Cartier-owner Richemont in talks to join bid for diamond giant De Beers - Reuters

Cartier-owner Richemont in talks to join bid for diamond giant De Beers - Reuters. 15 Oct 2026, 06:19 pm LONDON/JOHANNESBURG (Oct 15): Swiss luxury group Richemont is in talks to join a consortium bidding for De Beers, the diamond miner being sold by Anglo American and valued at about US$1 billion (RM4.1 billion), a person familiar with the matter said. A deal would give Cartier owner Richemont greater influence over a key part of its supply chain as the diamond industry emerges from a prolonged downturn. Bloomberg News earlier reported the talks, citing people familiar with the matter. Richemont was not immediately available for comment. Anglo American declined to comment. According to the Bloomberg report, Richemont, which also owns jeweller Van Cleef & Arpels, is discussing joining the Global Diamond Consortium, a group led by former De Beers chief executive Gareth Penny. Any bid for De Beers would also depend on Botswana, which has a first right of refusal, but has yet to say whether it intends to exercise that option. A spokesperson for Botswana's presidency said on Tuesday the government would not comment until a transaction had been concluded and signed. Officials said this summer a deal was likely to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026. Anglo put De Beers up for sale in May 2024 as part of a broader restructuring, after falling diamond prices and growing demand for synthetic stones hit the industry. De Beers has mining and exploration operations in Botswana, Namibia, Angola, South Africa and Canada. The Bloomberg report said negotiations were advanced, though there was no guarantee Richemont would join the consortium. US jewellery retailer Signet could also join the bid, Bloomberg said. Signet did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Uploaded by Magessan Varatharaja

What saint Laurent's next designer should understand.

What saint Laurent's next designer should understand. Luxury giant Richemont and US retailer Signet Jewelers Ltd. are in talks to join a consortium that's in prime position to buy diamond miner De Beers, according to five people familiar with the matter. Saint Laurent's legacy is less a collection of codes than a way of seeing women and the world. Vaccarello's successor should look beyond iconic images and silhouettes to the convictions that shaped them, argues biographer Laurence Benaïm. The country has a massive domestic market and unique authority in hair and body care. Now it needs to stoke interest around the world. A subtle and contemporary Chinese-inflected aesthetic has long made the designer's label the star of Shanghai fashion week. After over a decade in business, he's finally ready for growth.

"That would lead to the lowest growth since Corona" - Swatch and Richemont shares under pressure after China data.

"That would lead to the lowest growth since Corona" - Swatch and Richemont shares under pressure after China data. Richemont and Swatch shares fall on Tuesday. Disappointing retail data from China weigh on the entire sector. 15.09.2026 03:15 Prices of luxury goods shares are under pressure on Tuesday morning. Shares of industry leader LVMH fall by more than 2.6 percent to 406.55 euros. This immediately snuffs out the tentative stabilization attempt from the previous day. Shares of the luxury goods group are now at a price level last seen six years ago. Alongside European competitors such as Hermès (-2.1 percent), Dior (-2.1 percent) or Brunello Cucinelli (-1.3 percent), Swiss sector representatives Richemont and Swatch are also declining. Richemont sheds more than 2.5 percent to 168.70 francs, Swatch falls around 2.1 percent to 171.95 francs. Richemont is thus at a three-month low. Swatch shares have almost completely given back their price gains of more than 12 percent since the end of July. Triggers for the setback, besides the weak overall market, are disappointing retail data from China. These fell well short of expectations and, according to Barclays, are at the lowest level since the coronavirus pandemic. Disappointing Chinese retail sales and falling estimates. In August, Chinese retail sales rose only 0.4 percent year on year - economists had expected 0.8 percent. "That would lead to the lowest growth since Corona," says one trader, referring to a Barclays study. The bank lowers its full-year growth forecast after the new data from 3.7 percent in 2025 to only 1 percent. "Demand from Chinese customers is 'the' topic in luxury," emphasizes another market participant. For around a third of the sector's revenue depends on consumers in the Middle Kingdom. The latest earnings revisions by analysts for Swatch and Richemont reflect this setback. Over the past three months, experts lowered the forecast for earnings per share growth at Swatch from minus 10 percent to minus 11 percent. For Richemont, they still expect a plus of 9.2 percent, down from 11.4 percent previously. Because of the higher growth, more analysts favor Richemont shares. For example, 14 of 20 experts recommend buying the Geneva group's shares, only one recommends selling. At Swatch, however, the picture is the opposite. Here only two of 17 analysts advise buying, nine recommend holding and six selling. The average price target for Swatch is around 1.9 percent below the current price level, while for Richemont it is almost 25 percent above it. Richemont's half-year figures on November 13, 2026, and Swatch's annual figures in January 2027 are likely to provide further indications of the development of the core business. In addition, the data provide important insights into the state of Chinese consumers. Even earlier, LVMH's quarterly results are on the agenda - the industry leader will publish its third-quarter results on October 9 after the close of trading.
