Requirements
  • Has served as the technical authority on a complex, production-grade system — not as a manager who delegates the hard parts, but as an engineer who owned the architecture and the most difficult implementation decisions
  • Has built software that is actively used by researchers, scientists, or other domain experts to make consequential decisions, and understands how the needs of expert users differ from those of general operators
  • Has designed and shipped systems that include ML or AI components — whether LLM-powered workflows, model inference infrastructure, or agentic pipelines — in a production setting
  • Has operated effectively in ambiguous, fast-moving environments where requirements evolve and the right technical direction is not handed down from above
  • Has worked closely with ML scientists or research teams to bridge the gap between experimental models and reliable production software
  • Technically credible at the system design level: can evaluate architectural options, identify failure modes in complex distributed systems, and make principled decisions about tradeoffs between reliability, performance, and maintainability
  • Fluent in AI-native engineering: understands LLM capabilities and limitations, can design reliable orchestration layers for agentic workflows, and knows when AI is the right tool and when it is not
  • Engineering craft: writes clean, well-tested, well-documented code and reviews others' work at a level that raises quality without creating friction or slowing delivery
  • Writes with precision: technical design documents, architecture reviews, and API contracts that create clarity for collaborators rather than requiring follow-up
  • Debugging and root-cause analysis: finds the real source of production failures, distinguishes symptoms from causes, and fixes problems at the right level of abstraction
  • Technically deep and domain-curious: genuinely interested in the scientific and clinical problems the platform is solving, not just the engineering challenges they surface
  • High standards, low ego: holds their own work — and others' — to an exceptional bar without creating friction, and finds it satisfying to make a codebase better rather than just larger
  • Founder-minded: attracted to ambiguity, motivated by impact, and able to build a coherent technical direction from unclear requirements without waiting for full specification
  • Direct and decisive: makes technical calls with available information, owns the outcomes, and communicates tradeoffs clearly to non-engineering stakeholders
  • Multiplier: makes the engineers and scientists around them more effective through thoughtful technical leadership, clear documentation, and a genuine investment in shared quality
Responsibilities
  • Own the technical architecture and implementation for one or more AI-powered product areas within the Pioneering Intelligence platform, including scientific workflow tools, data infrastructure, and agentic AI systems
  • Design and build production-grade systems end-to-end: from data models and API contracts through deployment, observability, and long-term maintainability
  • Engage directly with scientific, clinical, and ML users to understand what they actually need — not what they ask for — and translate that understanding into software that advances their work
  • Make the highest-stakes technical decisions in your domain: system architecture, build-vs-buy tradeoffs, integration patterns for AI and ML components, and data pipeline design
  • Collaborate closely with product and ML science counterparts, contributing technical perspective to product strategy and helping shape what gets built before a single line of code is written
  • Participate in architectural reviews across the broader engineering team, raising the collective bar and identifying cross-cutting concerns before they become problems
  • Use AI-native engineering tools — including Claude Code and similar — as genuine force multipliers in your daily practice, not as novelties
  • When project needs require it, coordinate the work of fully embedded software engineering contractors, providing technical direction and maintaining quality standards

Flagship Pioneering funds and incubates life-sciences ventures by creating bioplatform companies, forming early-stage NewCos and guiding them to GrowthCos. It identifies broad scientific platforms that can generate multiple products, builds companies around these platforms, and moves them from inception to growth to assemble a multi-product portfolio. Unlike traditional investors, it creates new ventures from scratch and shepherds them through staged development, building a pipeline of category-leading biotech and life-science companies. Its goal is to develop a diverse portfolio of platform-based companies that advance human health and sustainability by delivering multiple products.

Flagship Pioneering launches Serif Biomedicines with $50M to pioneer modified DNA therapeutics

Flagship Pioneering has launched Serif Biomedicines with an initial $50 million commitment to develop Modified DNA as a new therapeutic platform. The company emerged after five years of platform development. Serif's Modified DNA technology aims to combine advantages of mRNA and gene therapy whilst addressing limitations like immunogenicity and inefficient nuclear access. The platform enables programmable, scalable, durable and redosable medicines without altering the genome. The company will present preclinical data at an upcoming scientific meeting showing tolerability in non-human primates and sustained gene expression with therapeutic effects following intravenous administration. Serif's initial programmes target rare diseases and immune programming. Founded in 2021 within Flagship Labs, Serif is led by CEO Jacob Rubens and co-founded by Noubar Afeyan, Geoffrey von Maltzahn, Eric Keen and Louisa Helms. The platform is protected by over 20 patent families.

Harbinger Health launches RESOLVE™ cancer detection category with $100M funding

Harbinger Health has announced RESOLVE™, a new category of blood-based multi-cancer detection tests designed to accelerate diagnosis in patients with suspected cancer. The first products are expected to launch commercially in the second half of 2026. The Cambridge-based biotech company raised $100 million in 2025, led by founder Flagship Pioneering, to support product development and its ongoing PROCARES prospective validation study. RESOLVE™ targets the diagnostic gap between symptom presentation and cancer diagnosis, which currently averages five months, during which mortality can increase by up to 8% monthly. The PROCARES study is nearing completion with over 88% of participants enrolled. It follows Harbinger's completed CORE-HH study, which demonstrated effective multi-cancer detection and high specificity in asymptomatic individuals.
