Requirements
  • The candidate must be a graduate of an accredited School of Practical Nursing for Licensed Practical Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse training.
  • The candidate must hold current appropriate state licensure.
  • The candidate must successfully complete a training course in the theory and practice of hemodialysis.
  • The candidate must successfully complete CPR certification.
  • The candidate must complete the Nurses Technical Training Program upon hire or soon thereafter.
  • The candidate must be able to provide coverage at area facilities during short-staffing periods or as required.
  • The candidate must meet the necessary requirements of the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment.
  • The candidate must have good verbal and written communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse functions as part of the hemodialysis health care team under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse provides direct patient care for assigned patients.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse performs technical aspects of dialysis procedures and administers and monitors treatments according to the treatment plan or supervisor direction.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse monitors and documents dialysis treatment parameters and other patient-care information in the patient record.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse reports significant information, changes in patient condition, equipment problems, incidents, complaints, and other problems to the supervisor.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse assists with developing and following teaching plans for patients and families regarding end-stage renal disease, dialysis therapy, diet, and medications.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse assists with emergency operational procedures and initiates basic CPR measures during cardiac or pulmonary arrest.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse administers intravenous medication in accordance with physician orders and state nurse practice laws.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse performs and documents pre-treatment, interim, and post-treatment reviews of patient condition.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse safely operates dialysis-related and emergency equipment and performs minor troubleshooting.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse maintains a clean, safe, and sanitary dialysis treatment environment and addresses blood spills according to bloodborne pathogen control policies.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse participates in staff meetings and patient care plan meetings.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse participates in in-service classes to maintain current knowledge of dialysis practice and technique.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse acts as a resource for other staff members and assists with coordinating care plans with physicians, dietitians, and social workers.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse provides coverage at assigned facilities and travels between facilities and community locations as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of medical-surgical nursing experience is preferred.
  • Hemodialysis experience is preferred but not required.
  • Intensive Care Unit experience is preferred but not required.
