Swisspacer and Sika give the glazing edge a new role.

Swisspacer and Sika give the glazing edge a new role. What happens when the glazing edge takes on more than its traditional role? With AdheraWindow Technology(TM), Swisspacer and Sika have developed a solution that enables the insulating glass unit to make a greater contribution to the stability of the entire window. This opens up possibilities for larger glass areas, slimmer frames and reduced material usage. The technology has already been tested in collaboration with pilot customers and is on the verge of market launch. In window technology, demands on design, comfort and resource efficiency are growing. Larger glazed areas, slimmer profile profiles and more natural light are in demand. At the same time, material usage and weight need to be reduced without compromising stability and durability. It is crucial not to meet these requirements by introducing ever-greater complexity. Swisspacer and Sika therefore asked themselves a fundamental question: must the necessary stability of the window come primarily from the profile and reinforcement or can the insulating glass unit itself make a greater contribution? - explains Matthias Bach, CEO of Swisspacer. This line of thinking gave rise to the initial concept for AdheraWindow Technology(TM) around the time of glasstec 2022. Four years later, the jointly developed solution is now on the verge of market launch. The basic principle is that Windoorexpert has transferred the structural integrity and rigidity of the entire window - including the sash, frame and its steel reinforcement - directly into the insulating glass unit - says Matthias Hägler, Global Head of Building Components at Sika. The glazing edge as a lever. AdheraWindow Technology(TM) comprises an adhesive from Sika, developed specifically for this application, and a warm edge spacer bar from Swisspacer, also developed specifically for this purpose. The new spacer bar differs in terms of geometry, material composition and surface finish from the existing spacer bars in the Swisspacer portfolio. The key lies in the interaction between the two components: together, they bond the glass panes to form a significantly stiffer insulating glass unit. This opens up new possibilities for window design. Combined expertise for the window technology of tomorrow: the development of AdheraWindow Technology(TM) is based on close collaboration between the teams at Swisspacer and Sika. Photo: Swisspacer Less is more. One specific area of application is in the manufacture of plastic windows. Depending on the system, element size and application, the additional rigidity may make it possible to reduce the amount of steel section used in the sash or, in certain configurations, to dispense with it altogether. Less steel and reduced material usage in the frame can lower the element's weight, thereby simplifying transport and installation. Reduced steel usage can also have a positive effect on the U value. Furthermore, the material savings open up potential for reducing the carbon footprint of window production. The design flexibility is not limited to material reduction: the increased rigidity can also allow for larger and taller units with narrower face widths. A change to the profile geometry is not strictly necessary, as the thickness of the glazing unit remains unchanged. Validated in practice. Innovation means more than just making a technical idea work. The key to the success of any new technology is reliable proof of its performance in real-world applications. That is why validation and extensive field testing under actual operating conditions are integral parts of its development process - says Christopher Marjan, Project Leader PPD & Manager Accreditation at Swisspacer. - In this way, Windoorexpert create the foundation and confidence needed to bring AdheraWindow Technology(TM) to market safely and reliably." In addition to internal investigations and tests in accordance with relevant EN standards, the technology was tested in collaboration with pilot partners from various sectors of the value chain. These include the system supplier aluplast, the window manufacturer Bayerwald, and Groke, the manufacturer of aluminium front doors and aluminium loft elements. This collaboration enabled the technology to be assessed from various perspectives - from system design through to the finished window unit and manufacturing processes. With regard to its use in window manufacturing, Matthias Dick, Business Development Manager at Sika, highlights the ability to utilise existing machinery. Window manufacturers can process the technology using the machines they already have in operation. No change to their production is required - says Dick. - Furthermore, one process step can be omitted, thereby simplifying the manufacturing process. Next step: market launch. The jointly developed solution is to be launched on the market as a complete system under the name AdheraWindow Technology(TM) developed by Swisspacer & Sika. The future belongs to solutions that achieve more with less effort and can be easily integrated into existing processes. With AdheraWindow Technology(TM), Windoorexpert aim to help push the boundaries of what is currently possible even further - says Corinna Düring, Head of Marketing at Swisspacer. Joint market launch: The technology is being launched as a complete system under the name "AdheraWindow Technology(TM) developed by Swisspacer & Sika" Companies wishing to explore the technology at an early stage and evaluate potential areas of application are invited to get in touch with Swisspacer and Sika. The upcoming market launch offers the opportunity to familiarise oneself with a new approach to window construction at an early stage and to play an active role in shaping it. 44-100 Gliwice ul.
