- A high school diploma or GED.
- At least 1 year of related work experience.
- A Certified Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate or equivalent.
- American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification or equivalent.
- American Red Cross Standard First Aid certification or equivalent.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills to supervise and communicate with a diverse population and obtain compliance with rules and regulations.
- Knowledge and ability to evaluate water conditions at aquatics facilities, beaches, oceans, and other offsite natural pools, streams, or rivers, and adjust programs to address potential dangers or hazards.
- Ability to assess the evolving dynamics and safety threats of individuals participating in aquatic activities.
- Ability to use appropriate lifesaving techniques and rescue methods for the site and conditions.
- Knowledge and ability to render first aid for accidents in water and surrounding areas.
- Ability to effectively enforce pool rules and understand regulations governing swimming pool operation.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Knowledge of swimming pool chemistry and water testing, including evaluating test results and adjusting water chemistry.
- Knowledge of proper swimming techniques and ability to teach all age levels.
- Ocean lifeguarding experience.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds and perform frequent swimming, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and reaching.
- Ability to work in wet pool environments and outdoor locations with exposure to humidity, sun, wind, and unstable ground.
- Create work schedules and assign and oversee the work of regular and temporary lifeguards.
- Supervise swimming activities at the aquatics facility and during off-campus field trips to ensure compliance with policies, guidelines, and safety procedures.
- Warn swimmers about improper activities or danger and enforce pool regulations and water safety policies.
- Evaluate safety conditions and initiate the aquatics emergency action plan as required.
- Administer first aid, rescue swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administer CPR or artificial respiration when necessary.
- Inspect pool facilities, equipment, and water to ensure they are safe and usable.
- Supervise and assist with cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment.
- Monitor and adjust pool water chemistry and maintain appropriate records.
- Resolve scheduling conflicts to ensure a safe pool environment when competing programs or priorities require use of aquatic facilities.
- Instruct swimming fundamentals classes when needed.
- Instruct or co-instruct aquatic certification courses, including junior lifeguard, lifeguard training, and CPR courses.
- Oversee water safety for off-campus aquatics field trips.
- Adjust aquatic programs as necessary to protect students and staff based on water conditions and identified hazards.
- At least 2 years of experience.
- Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.
- First Responder Certification.
- Ocean rescue experience.
- Previous experience teaching school-aged children.
- Previous experience in a school setting.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to Hawaiian culture and Christian values.
- Previous experience as a team or group lead.
