Requirements
  • A current District of Columbia Certified Nurse Midwife license, Controlled Dangerous Substances registration, and Drug Enforcement Administration registration are required.
  • Current American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Current licensure and certification must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Experience and capability using electronic medical records are required.
  • The ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide care for patients throughout their reproductive lifespan, including prenatal, childbirth, postpartum, and gynecological services.
  • Assist with inpatient triage, rounding, triage assessments, antepartum and postpartum care, vaginal births, and inpatient coverage.
  • Provide primary care to new and established patients seeking obstetrics and gynecology care, including diagnosis and management of urinary tract infections, vaginitis, sexually transmitted diseases, and other female-related diagnoses.
  • Establish medical and nursing diagnoses; order, perform, and evaluate diagnostic studies; perform and monitor therapeutic procedures; and assess or manage follow-up plans.
  • Perform follow-up antepartum and postpartum visits, including physical examinations, microscopy, and screening for sexually transmitted infections, bacterial vaginosis, and cervical cancer.
  • Provide preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to women across the age spectrum, including general health maintenance, contraception, and menopause care.
  • Obtain medical histories and conduct physical examinations and evaluations as appropriate.
  • Order and interpret laboratory and radiology testing as appropriate.
  • Provide patient education pertinent to health conditions.
  • Recognize and manage common acute and chronic illnesses within the scope of practice according to standards of care.
  • Record and document health assessment data necessary to maintain, coordinate, or expedite required services.
  • Consult and collaborate with, and refer patients to, physician colleagues for high-risk conditions including HIV infection, hypertension, diabetes, pyelonephritis, and other abnormalities.
  • Prescribe and regulate medications according to Howard University Faculty Practice Plan protocol.
  • Report abnormal patient findings to appropriate physician colleagues and coordinate the reporting of sexually transmitted diseases to state agencies as indicated.
  • Support clinical activities of the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan by providing patient and family education, developing teaching materials, and providing other support.
  • Maintain responsibility and accountability for time management, professional relationships, and interpersonal interactions across the hospital and Faculty Practice Plan team.
  • Maintain professional development and current clinical practice by attending relevant continuing education.
Desired Qualifications
  • Membership in an applicable professional organization is preferred.
  • Two years of experience in an ambulatory care setting is preferred.
  • Spanish language skills are preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is preferred.
