About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or physics is required.
  • At least 1 year of hands-on testing experience is required; experience from internships, clubs, or other hands-on extracurricular activities qualifies.
  • Flight hardware is typically built in tight quarters, requiring physical dexterity.
  • The role requires physical effort, including sitting or standing for extended periods and lifting or carrying materials or equipment up to 25 pounds unassisted.
  • Work is performed in an environment with exposure to fumes, odors, and noise.
  • The role occasionally involves working in extreme outdoor environments, including heat, cold, and rain.
  • Hours vary depending on site operational needs, so flexibility is required.
  • Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute engine- and component-level tests to evaluate hardware performance and survivability during missions.
  • Own recurring test campaigns, including test plan creation, new system activation, test operations, data review, and test-stand equipment design and fabrication.
  • Provide daily direction and instruction to technicians fabricating and integrating test articles and stand equipment.
  • Develop and maintain test procedures, sequences, scripts, configuration files, and software.
  • Operate and troubleshoot data acquisition and control systems, wiring, and instrumentation; data acquisition systems are primarily National Instruments-based.
  • Operate and troubleshoot fluid and mechanical systems involving low- to high-pressure gaseous working fluids and rocket propellants, including high-pressure nitrogen and methane systems and cryogenics, as well as structural components and supporting infrastructure.
  • Operate mechanical systems, including test-stand support structures, heat exchangers, vacuum pumps, tooling, and fluid components such as valves, reliefs, burst disks, and tubing.
  • Automate repetitive test operations to increase efficiency and safety.
  • Develop processes to increase testing capability and rates while maintaining rigorous safety practices.
  • Identify and characterize system pitfalls and potential hazards, then collaborate with design engineers to resolve anomalies through improvements to test stands and flight hardware.
  • Operate the test console and direct technicians in executing test processes.
  • Analyze and review data using numerical data-analysis tools to ensure hardware is operating as expected and to interpret test results.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute integration and testing processes, and collaborate with design engineers to improve hardware.
  • Coordinate the resource-management process, including planning, parts, coordination, skilled-labor coordination, and process verification.

Desired Qualifications

  • A master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in production and test systems.
  • Hands-on experience in a test or production facility, factory, or laboratory.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience using quick thinking and problem solving in critical situations.
  • Knowledge of or experience with aerospace structural, mechanical, or propulsion systems assembly and testing.
  • Ability to use test instrumentation and control components, including pressure transducers, thermocouples, resistance temperature detectors, strain gauges, accelerometers, flow meters, load cells, relays, and solenoid valves.
  • Ability to solve problems requiring technical analysis.
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals and reports.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical schematics.
  • Knowledge of hazardous systems, including cryogenic, flammable, hypergolic, and pyrophoric systems.
  • Knowledge of high-pressure system design and handling.
  • Experience using test instrumentation and control components.
  • Intermediate skill with Windows operating systems.
  • Intermediate skill with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and OneNote.
  • Novice-level skill with computer-aided design modeling, preferably Unigraphics NX, and Teamcenter.
  • Novice-to-intermediate skill in Python, C/C++, and SQL.

About the Company

SpaceX

Builds rockets and runs Starlink satellite internet

SpaceX builds and launches reusable rockets and spacecraft for NASA, the military, and companies, and it runs Starlink, a satellite internet service for homes and businesses. In 2020, its Dragon capsule became the first privately built spacecraft to carry astronauts to the International Space Station. Its Falcon 9 rocket lands its first stage so the booster can fly again, which cuts launch costs, while Starlink beams internet from low-orbit satellites to small dishes for a monthly fee. SpaceX also owns xAI, maker of the Grok chatbot and owner of the social network X, and is building Starship, a fully reusable rocket meant to carry people to the Moon and Mars. Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, and it is based in Starbase, Texas.
