Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two years of facility maintenance, equipment maintenance, custodial, or construction work; experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four years.
  • A valid Texas Class C Driver’s License, or the ability to acquire one by the hire date.
  • A driving record meeting the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation standards, including no more than three moving violations or six Driver Record Evaluation points within 36 months.
  • The ability to read, write, and fluently speak English.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and proper safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in equipment and facility maintenance and moderate-level maintenance and construction.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and procedures for work areas and equipment.
  • Knowledge of city practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Skill in oral and written communication, computer and related software use, problem solving, planning, and organizing.
  • The ability to operate power tools and read and understand simple blueprints.
  • The ability to establish and maintain working relationships with City employees and the public.
  • The ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • The ability to work in confined spaces and hazardous environments.
  • The ability to pass a criminal background check and security threat assessment.
  • The ability to work assigned shifts, including early morning, evening, night, weekend, holiday, and after-hours schedules, and to perform overtime, on-call, or call-back duties when required.
Responsibilities
  • Inspect buildings and equipment for needed repairs and maintenance, and perform minor repairs.
  • Assist trade crews with work orders, material preparation, preventive maintenance inspections, repairs, and new equipment installations.
  • Perform system diagnostics, calibrations, troubleshooting, and repairs.
  • Operate hand and power tools, including drills, grinders, sanders, power saws, sewer machines, pro-press tools, shop vacuums, and water jetters.
  • Perform semi-skilled carpentry work to construct and repair walls, ceilings, and flooring.
  • Repair and replace electrical plugs, switches, ballasts, lamps, fixtures, and cords.
  • Repair and install door hardware and closures, kick plates, handles, locks, and crash bars.
  • Perform basic plumbing installations and repairs, including faucets, drains, valves, commodes, urinals, soap dispensers, and towel dispensers.
  • Perform basic service on pumps, air handlers, and cooling towers, including repacking bearings, changing oil and filters, and lubricating motors, gearboxes, and pumps.
  • Assist with repairing system equipment and components using aerial man lifts.
  • Perform operations and maintenance tasks involving confined-space entry and hazardous environments.
  • Maintain records of repairs, calibrations, and tests in the Asset Management System.
  • Read profiles and blueprints.
  • Perform maintenance and inspections on fire extinguishers.
  • Provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, and guidance to others when assigned.
  • Drive City vehicles and operate vehicles on the airport operating area.
  • Report to work during emergencies or bad weather when scheduled and, in some cases, when not scheduled.

Austin Water secures $55M low-interest funding for pipe replacement and infrastructure projects

Austin Water has secured $55 million in low-interest funding from the State Water Implementation Fund for Texas for capital improvement projects. The first tranche of $13 million carries an interest rate as low as 2.895%, expected to save upwards of $1.5 million in interest over the 20-year loan period. The funding will primarily replace ageing polybutylene pipes, with $45 million allocated to address water loss from pipes installed until the mid-1980s, saving an estimated $2.7 million in financing costs. An additional $10 million will expand the reclaimed water infrastructure through the Travis Heights Purple Pipe project, connecting two service areas whilst saving approximately $1.1 million. Combined with a recent debt defeasance transaction saving $49.6 million, Austin Water's cumulative savings since 2016 now exceed $675 million.
