Axcelis shares fall 22.4% despite recovery as margins lag and China accounts for 46% of revenue

Axcelis Technologies shares have dropped 22.4% over the past month despite improving second-quarter results and an upgraded 2026 outlook. The semiconductor equipment maker reported revenues of $215.2 million, up 10.6% year over year, with systems bookings climbing 36.1% to $130.9 million. However, profitability remains under pressure. Non-GAAP gross margin fell to 42.7% from 45.2% a year earlier, whilst operating margin narrowed to 14.7% from 17.7%. Higher service costs and product mix weighed on margins. Management now expects mid-single-digit revenue growth for full-year 2026, an improvement from its previous flat-growth forecast. Memory and power applications are driving recovery, representing 14% and 39% of second-quarter systems revenue respectively. Execution risks persist. Systems backlog fell 21.6% year over year to $451.6 million, whilst China generated 46% of quarterly revenues. Two customers each accounted for 17.8% of first-half revenues.
