Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Perform specialized and complex experiments and studies.
  • Participate in the publication of significant research results.
  • Advance expertise through education, training, and research.
  • Write extramural grants and proposals to gain support when appropriate.
  • Collect, prepare, analyze, dissect, and evaluate specimens and tissue cultures.
  • Weigh and anesthetize laboratory animals for experiments.
  • Operate sensitive and highly complex laboratory equipment.
  • Perform calculations to complete research test results.
  • Perform photography and dark room processing.
  • Participate in training sessions and workshops.
  • Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
  • Collect information and data through observation, experimentation, and various other methods, including operating highly technical laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Prepare tissue and specimens for complex procedures and devise experimental techniques for tests and analyses.
  • Confer with the principal investigator to develop research project plans, discuss interpretation of results, and prepare scientific manuscripts for publication.
  • Design, perform, analyze, and interpret DNA genotyping experiments.
  • Identify and order supplies and reagents for experiments.
  • Keep logs of laboratory inventories.
  • Update and maintain laboratory databases.
  • Train and supervise new laboratory personnel.
  • Operate laboratory equipment including centrifuges, liquid handling robots, PCR blocks, and scanners.
  • Perform molecular techniques including PCR, SNP genotyping, agarose gel electrophoresis, and tissue culture.
  • Analyze data for quality and consistency, troubleshoot equipment and protocols, prepare progress and trend reports, and make appropriate recommendations or conclusions to the supervisor.
  • Learn new techniques and standard operating protocols in a timely manner.
  • Review laboratory methods manuals, scientific journals, abstracts, and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.
