Requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of horse racetrack surfaces and related issues.
  • Knowledge of the horse racing industry.
  • General understanding of the operational and regulatory structure of horse racing.
  • Knowledge of managing a team of 10–15 people.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, leadership, organizational, and management skills.
  • Strong computer skills with the Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to multitask in a demanding environment.
  • Ability to create and manage a seven-day schedule.
  • Ability to maintain and influence internal and external relationships.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment.
  • Ability to evaluate the track surface to determine the best maintenance approach while reducing horse injuries.
  • Ability to make decisions regarding the track surface in variable weather.
  • Ability to identify areas that improve track-maintenance efficiency while maintaining high safety standards.
  • Ability to build strong relationships within the racing department and property services to enable a collaborative work environment.
  • Excellent judgment when maneuvering machinery while sharing the track with horses.
  • Post-secondary education in Property Services, horse racing track surface maintenance, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of practical experience in a similar environment.
  • Experience operating graders, tractors, and water trucks.
  • A valid D-class license is required.
  • Ability to evaluate a horse's gait to determine a suitable track surface.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays to match the race schedule.
Responsibilities
  • Manage and supervise track staff, providing direction regarding management of the track surface before, during, and after racing.
  • Perform daily maintenance of the racing surface at the Woodbine location and ensure the track and equipment are operational and maintained in safe working order.
  • Conduct maintenance activities with minimal impact on operations.
  • Recommend that the Director of Racing Surfaces cancel racing because of adverse or dangerous conditions when the Manager is absent.
  • Address owners', trainers', and jockeys' concerns regarding track-surface issues.
  • Monitor workload and develop and implement tasks and work procedures.
  • Provide managers with feedback on daily operational needs for parts, materials, services, and staffing.
  • Create and implement the daily work schedule for track-surface employees.
  • Manage the daily track-log process for the racing surface, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
  • Monitor the environment to support due diligence and compliance.
  • Ensure all related equipment is in safe working condition and ensure staff are properly trained.
  • Ensure the horse ambulance and emergency lights are operational for racing.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with horsemen and other racing-related staff.
  • Interpret, administer, and implement applicable collective agreements, organizational policies, and Human Resources policies as required.
  • Represent the racing-surface department on Health and Safety committees to ensure safety protocols are created and followed.
