Requirements
  • A Master's Degree in Counseling or School Counseling is preferred.
  • A valid Texas counseling certification or eligibility for certification is required.
  • Knowledge of a comprehensive counseling program as defined by the American School Counselor Association is required.
  • Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development is required.
  • The ability to instruct students and manage their behavior is required.
  • A minimum of two years of teaching experience is preferred.
  • The ability to maintain emotional control under stress and work with frequent interruptions is required.

Responsibilities
  • Assist school faculty and staff with the guidance and counseling program at the assigned school under the direction of the campus principal.
  • Maintain compliance with district policies.
  • Teach the campus developmental guidance curriculum consistent with the district guidance program plan and tailored to campus needs.
  • Assist teachers in teaching guidance-related curriculum.
  • Guide individuals and groups of students in developing education plans and career awareness.
  • Counsel individual students and small groups with identified needs and concerns.
  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
  • Work with school and community personnel to bring together resources for students.
  • Maintain a communication system that collects and disseminates information to other professionals as appropriate.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with school professionals and representatives of community resources.
  • Use an effective referral process to assist students and others in using special programs and services.
  • Assist in conducting needs assessments to determine appropriate services for the campus and students.
  • Evaluate safe schools data and academic achievement data to support a comprehensive counseling program.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of student assessments.
  • Review student records as needed to determine whether students have completed grade or graduation requirements.
  • Collaborate with staff to compile, maintain, and file required physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents.
  • Assist in planning school guidance and counseling programs to meet identified needs, priorities, and program objectives.
  • Support a comprehensive and balanced counseling program.
  • Comply with applicable federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, and board policies in the guidance and counseling area.
  • Comply with district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Adhere to ethical and legal standards and model professional and responsible behavior.
  • Participate in professional development to improve skills related to the job assignment.
