- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Graduate from a Medical Assistant Program or the Med Ed Program, or have one year of clinical experience.
- Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
- Pass a state criminal background check and, when applicable, a federal criminal background check for regulated areas.
- Lift, move, stoop, reach, stand, walk, and carry materials and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- Position and/or lift patients and stand or walk for 4 to 12 hours per day.
- Work in a clinical outpatient environment with frequent exposure to biohazards and communicable disease.
- Respond quickly to varying demands from providers and patients.
- Provide patient-care and treatment support as directed by attending providers in an outpatient clinic.
- Provide clerical and clinical support to medical staff in the assigned unit.
- Support medical staff in meeting patient needs and operating the outpatient unit efficiently.
- Assist providers with requisitions and forms for patient examinations or testing, help ensure test results are available, and assist patients and providers during medical office visits.
- Administer prescribed medication under the supervision of an attending provider.
- Perform qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations of specimens.
- Obtain and document patient specimens as ordered.
- Document and report test results to the medical provider.
- Perform assigned or ordered point-of-care testing after training and skills testing, and maintain quality-control testing and logs.
- Schedule additional ancillary testing and assist providers with requisitions or forms for patient examination or testing.
- Act as a chaperone during medical examinations.
- Ensure medical records and test results, including records from referring physicians, are available for visits; inspect and review records for correct order and completeness.
- Monitor the nurse call system and relay telephone calls and information to appropriate staff.
- Provide patients, families, and visitors with assistance and information as instructed by the physician.
- Participate in the Quality Assurance Program to help ensure quality patient services.
- Generate required patient-charge data according to WVU Medicine outpatient procedures.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment for patient-care needs by preparing orders and reporting needs to the supervisor.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the use and care of printers, embossers, computers, and other assigned equipment.
- Assist with maintenance of inventory and equipment on the assigned outpatient unit.
- Schedule and coordinate new and return appointments using the computerized system according to WVU Medicine outpatient clinic policies and procedures.
- Schedule and coordinate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Assist with patient registration, collect identification and billing information, enter data into the computer, obtain charts and fee sheets, and obtain signatures for release of information and consent to treatment.
- Assist the Registration Specialist with depositing money and late-night coverage.
- Assist the Manager or Supervisor with unit correspondence using computer software.
- Process and mail letters to patients.
- Registration or certification as a medical assistant.
- One year of experience as a medical assistant or in patient care.
