'Nature is a familiar place for all of us': Therapeutic garden brings benefits to Vancouver Veterans Affairs campus.

'Nature is a familiar place for all of us': Therapeutic garden brings benefits to Vancouver Veterans Affairs campus. Vibrant habitat also supports local bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects. Published: June 9, 2026, 6:06am Sponsored advertisement A new garden on the Vancouver Veterans Affairs campus offers therapeutic benefits to patients at the medical center while creating a vibrant habitat that supports local bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects. The garden was unveiled to veterans, caregivers and families on May 22 through a collaboration among VA FARMS, the Vancouver Bee Project and Legacy Health's therapeutic garden program. By using horticulture as a therapeutic medium, the garden helps veterans meet specific treatment goals and improve health outcomes, said Meghan Mckiernan, Legacy's therapeutic garden program manager. "Nature is a familiar place for all of us," Mckiernan said. "You see the cognitive shift, and as someone who works in patient care, it's just a very profound thing to witness that part of a patient's healing journey." Children enrolled in Legacy Health's therapeutic garden program worked with Mckiernan to curate a list of plants suitable for the VA FARMS space. Community organizations such as the Elks and Nature Play Designs assisted in procuring plants for this project. "It just really kind highlighted how wide-reaching nature and horticulture can be in our community," Mckiernan said. She hopes to bring more programming to veterans in partnership with fellow VA therapeutic garden coordinator Mandi Atkinson, whose efforts were instrumental in making the collaboration possible. Healthcare settings are increasingly adding therapeutic gardens due to the myriad health benefits correlated with nature and green spaces, according to the American Horticultural Therapy Association. Sponsored advertisement For example, multiple studies show higher levels of exposure to green space were associated with significantly lower levels of symptoms for depression, anxiety and stress. Patients aren't the only ones benefiting from quiet time in nature. Nurses and medical professionals also significantly benefit from proximity to a green space, which is why every Legacy hospital has a therapeutic garden, Mckiernan said. At Legacy Salmon Creek, the public can visit the therapeutic garden on the third floor near the cafeteria at any time of the day. "For our employees typically working long shifts inside, being able to take a break out in the garden is really important as an opportunity to just reconnect with nature and get some fresh air before they go back into a really stressful, busy environment," Mckiernan said. Legacy Health to close Clark County clinics due to increased costs, reduced revenue

Legacy Health to close Clark County clinics due to increased costs, reduced revenue. 'Legacy projects a loss of approximately $38 million this fiscal year' Legacy Health will be closing clinics throughout Clark County starting Nov. 15 due to rising labor and supply costs, stagnant reimbursement rates and broader uncertainties in health care. "After a detailed review of services, programs and clinics with the greatest financial challenges, Legacy Health will move forward with several difficult but necessary closures and changes," Legacy Health wrote in a statement. All Washington Legacy-GoHealth Urgent Care clinics will close Nov. 15 including locations in Camas, Cascade Park, Hazel Dell and Salmon Creek, according to a statement from Legacy Health. The Legacy-GoHealth clinic located in the Hazel Dell Marketplace was already temporarily closed with no anticipated reopening date. The Legacy Salmon Creek Pain Clinic at 2101 N.E. 139th St., Suite 265, will be ending all operations on March 20. All other services operating out of Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center will remain open. Recent Medicaid cuts, along with state requirements for nurse-to-patient ratios and presumptive eligibility for financial assistance, have resulted in increased costs and reduced revenue, according to Legacy Health. "Despite ongoing operational improvements and more than 200 position reductions in the past three years, Legacy projects a loss of approximately $38 million this fiscal year," Legacy Health's statement said. This projection is before any negative impacts experienced by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which will cause deep cuts to Medicaid and other safety net programs, according to Legacy Health. Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates are not currently covering the cost of care for the two-thirds of Legacy patients who are covered by Medicare or Medicaid, Legacy Health said. "These decisions were not made lightly and are essential to remain financially viable and ensure Legacy remains here to serve our patients and communities for years to come," Legacy Health said. Legacy Health announces closures amid financial strain

Legacy Health announces closures amid financial strain. PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) - Legacy Health is set to close several clinics and programs in Oregon and Washington due to significant financial pressures. The healthcare organization cited rising labor and supply costs, stagnant reimbursement rates, and state-level mandates as contributing factors to its financial challenges. Legacy Health projects a loss of approximately $38 million this fiscal year, even before potential impacts from HR1, also known as the "One Big Beautiful Bill," which could lead to cuts in Medicaid and other safety net programs. In a statement, Legacy Health said, "Like many healthcare organizations, Legacy Health is facing significant financial pressures that require difficult but necessary choices to ensure we can continue delivering high-quality care and fulfilling our mission for years to come." The closures include the Legacy Devers Eye Institute at Emanuel, the Emanuel Outpatient Neuro-Rehabilitation program, the Legacy Salmon Creek Pain Clinic, and the Good Samaritan Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, all set to end operations in early 2026. Additionally, all Legacy-GoHealth Urgent Care clinics in Washington will close by Nov. 15, 2025, while eight centers in Oregon will remain open. Legacy Health emphasized that these decisions were made after a detailed review and are essential for the organization's financial viability and continued service to patients and communities.
