Requirements
  • Disassemble, clean, inspect, prepare, assemble, sterilize and dispense surgical and procedure instrumentation and trays for the operating room, Delivery Room, nursing units, and all other departments, according to manufacturers' instructions for use and prescribed procedures and aseptic technique.
  • Operate automated washers, cart washers, ultrasonic washers, and sterilizers in a safe and efficient manner following manufacturers' written instructions and department policy and procedure.
  • Examine and test instruments meticulously to ensure proper integrity, function and cleanliness prior to being sterilized or High Level disinfected.
  • Ensure verification of pre- and post-sterilization quality indicators.
  • Report any issues or problems with the sterilization equipment to appropriate Sterile Processing Department leadership.
  • Use Instrument Tracking System in the decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and storage of surgical trays and peel-pouched items to maintain inventory levels and accurate documentation.
  • Accurately label each item with name and/or expiration date.
  • Routinely check for outdates and package integrity of sterilized items; replace/report as necessary.
  • May be responsible for maintaining, assembling and distributing other durable medical equipment including but not limited to code carts based on campus requirements.
  • May be responsible for equipment rounds based on campus requirements.
  • Responsible for off shift and holiday call coverage based on campus requirements.
  • Participates in the onboarding process of new team members as appropriate per campus.
  • Knowledge of how to convey respect and collaborate with each patient, family and/or designated care partner in care.
  • Knowledge of people with diverse backgrounds and the ability to convey respect and connect effectively.
  • Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques, ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to develop and use, strategies, practices and tools for effectively managing local or distributed inventories of finished goods.
  • Knowledge of the common types of equipment or devices used in the healthcare industry, and the ability to use these in patient care.
  • Knowledge of decontamination process for exposure to chemical or germ weapons.
  • Knowledge of patient safety and error prevention to impede the spread of infection and disease.
  • Understanding of the necessity and value of accuracy and attention to detail, ability to process information with high levels of accuracy.
  • Understanding of the necessity and value of teamwork, ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply appropriate policies, procedures and management methods to maximize operating room efficiency and productivity.
Responsibilities
  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.

  • Communicates with and supports the interprofessional team, patient, family and designated care partners.

  • Routinely checks for outdates and package integrity of sterilized items; replaces/reports as necessary.
  • May be responsible for maintaining, assembling and distributing of other durable medical equipment including but not limited to code carts based on campus requirements.
  • May be responsible for equipment rounds based on campus requirements.
  • Responsible for off shift and holiday call coverage based on campus requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
