Sharp Memorial recognized for exceptional heart care.

Sharp Memorial recognized for exceptional heart care. By The Health News Team | May 22, 2026 Sharp Memorial Hospital recently announced that it has earned Comprehensive Cardiac Center Certification from The Joint Commission. This prestigious designation recognizes the hospital as a leader in delivering advanced, coordinated heart care. The certification is reserved for hospitals that provide a full range of heart care services across every stage of care - from prevention and early intervention to complex procedures, recovery and long-term management. Fewer than a dozen hospitals in California - and just three dozen nationwide - have earned this designation. What this means for patients For patients, the recognition signifies access to comprehensive, seamless and evidence-based heart care. As a Comprehensive Cardiac Center, Sharp Memorial offers a team-based approach, where specialists work together to ensure patients, both in inpatient and outpatient settings, receive timely diagnosis, advanced treatment and continued support tailored to their condition. "This certification reflects how our teams guide patients through every stage of heart care, from the moment they enter our system through recovery and long-term management," says Grace Ullum, director of the heart, vascular and thoracic service lines at Sharp Memorial Hospital. "It's about delivering the right care, at the right time, with the patient always at the center." Sharp Memorial's cardiovascular program has long been known for its leadership and innovation - from historic milestones in open-heart surgery and heart transplantation to ongoing advances in interventional heart care and surgical technologies. This certification builds on that legacy while reflecting the hospital's ongoing commitment to quality, safety and compassionate, patient-centered care. Years in the making Achieving Comprehensive Cardiac Center certification reflects years of dedicated effort. Sharp Memorial began working toward certification in 2022, aligning clinical excellence, technology and care coordination to meet The Joint Commission's rigorous standards. As part of the review process, the hospital underwent a comprehensive evaluation of its ability to deliver advanced cardiac services, support prevention and disease management, and provide a seamless patient experience. "This recognition reflects the hard work and commitment of our entire team in providing excellent, patient-centered heart care," Ullum says. She notes that the certification is a testament to the collaboration among doctors, advanced practice providers, nurses and support staff who work together every day. "Our focus has always been on doing what's best for our patients," Ullum adds. "This certification validates that work and pushes us to keep raising the bar." A trusted destination for heart care With its new Comprehensive Cardiac Center designation, Sharp Memorial Hospital continues to serve as a trusted destination for patients with complex heart conditions. For patients and families, the recognition offers confidence in knowing that their care meets the highest national standards - close to home. Grace Ullum. Donate your vintage treasures for the Hospital Auxiliary's Summer Fair fundraiser.

Donate your vintage treasures for the Hospital Auxiliary's Summer Fair fundraiser. * May 14, 2026 Updated May 14, 2026 * 0 The Sharp Coronado Hospital Auxiliary is hosting its Summer Fair on Friday, June 5, from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the hospital's Sandermann Auditorium at 265 Soledad Place. At last fall's Holiday Fair, Auxiliary Volunteer Mari Gilbert introduced her fun vintage items of family heirlooms and collectibles for sale. Gilbert assured the fundraising planners, "If it's old, somebody wants it!" Purchasing "Vintage" is a current trend to recycle items instead of discarding them in landfills. And to relive a time past. Clothing, handbags, china, toys, and games all play a part. At Gilbert's booth, look for 80's to today's fashion, including denim, leather jackets, designer items, rock and roll t-shirts, and jewelry for both men and women. If you are looking for a Father's Day gift, consider a military or nautical collectible, print, or antique. What are some of the more unusual things that will be available? Check out Hotel del Coronado memorabilia from the 1930s when Gilbert's grandmother actually lived there. Coronadonewsca need donations! Given their popularity, the Auxiliary is asking for residents to consider donating items that are taking up too much room at home or in their storage units! Do you have an 80's big shoulder pad jacket hanging in your closet? Your child's old lunch box with Roy Rogers or Star Wars characters can become someone's new treasure. An evening bag, costume jewelry, old Levi's, luggage from 1950, and nearly anything military or nautical will make a perfect donation for a great cause. They will be sold at the Fair, and 100% of the proceeds will benefit the hospital. No furniture or large items can be accepted due to space constraints. Contact Gloria Aberasturi at 619-402-0402 to arrange to donate your objects no later than May 22. Additional artists and vendors will be selling their wares, including many unique handmade items. A portion of their sales will be donated to the Auxiliary, the nonprofit organization that supports the hospital's programs and projects. Home decor, handmade newborn outfits, charcuterie boards, bottle carriers, housewares, cloth carry bags, handcrafted greeting cards, jewelry, homemade jams, and hostess gifts will be for sale. Specialty Accessories, a favorite vendor, will have a large selection of clothing for sale. Pouch Leather Bags is returning with many sizes and colors. Once again, Pampered Chef will be displaying their amazing range of cooking tools. The Auxiliary's Quilt and Afghan Committee will be selling lap quilts and other handmade textile creations. Approximately 80 items are made each year and then donated to clients at the Villa or in hospice care. The Holiday and Summer Fairs are the only times they are available for sale. 100% of their sale price is donated to the Auxiliary. After you shop, please enjoy the food of the delicious Nono Jose Argentinas food truck vendor. Don't miss their wonderful empanadas! Most of the funds raised at this event will be directed to the Auxiliary's pledge in support of the Primary Stroke Center, offering expert stroke care to its community. Additionally, the Auxiliary has begun supporting the Katy Green and Cathy McJannet Nursing Scholarship program. Through this program, current Sharp Coronado Hospital employees can apply for funding to advance their nursing careers. VOL. 116, NO. 19 - May 13, 2026
