Layoffs bite deep into Trump country. Workers gather as they wait for U.S. President Donald Trump to deliver remarks during a visit to a Mack Trucks' assembly plant, in Macungie, Pennsylvania, U.S., June 23, 2026. REUTERS/Evelyn Hockstein August 20, 2026 | 09:40PM ET President Donald Trump and his GOP majorities in the House and Senate are riding on public approval in November, but few voters are sidling up with either of their economic messages. And recent lay-offs peppering the Trump-voting heartland don't appear to be making Republicans' argument any easier as the nation slides into the midterms. A Kearney company construction industry in Kansas City, Mo. announced Thursday morning that it will be laying off dozens of its employees - who will be going home for good just one month before voters head to the polls to deliver their verdict on Trump and incumbent Republicans' economy. "Cornerstone Building Brands, Inc. intends to implement a reduction in force at its Kearney, MO facility located at 303 W. Major St., Kearney, MO 64060," company leaders told the Missouri Department of Higher Education & Workforce Development, citing a facility cut that will affect more than 60 employees. "The reduction in force is expected to be permanent, and there will not be any bumping rights for the affected employees," company leaders added. "All affected employees have been notified of their separation dates and that their separation from employment will be permanent. Affected employees are expected to be separated from employment on or around October 19, 2026." Jobs include technicians, fork lift operators, machine operators and various production people connected to the construction industry, the company said. None of the affected employees are represented by a union. Cornerstone Building Brands manufactures residential and commercial exterior building solutions, according to the company's website. But the construction industry has not fared well under Trump's policies. Critics are blasting the president for misleading the public about the actual state of the American economy, which Trump claimed would see a manufacturing boom due to his tariffs. "Since his re-election, we've lost 75,000 manufacturing jobs and $60 Billion in annual factory construction," The Lincoln Project posted on X last month. "Over the same period, Biden had created 625,000." The Lincoln Project cited Department of Labor payroll figures proving manufacturing employment had fallen by 75,000 since Trump's inauguration. Speaking with AlterNet earlier in July, one economist explained that Trump's tariffs have in general created a climate of economic volatility. "It's about uncertainty," Dr. Robert Shapiro, undersecretary of commerce for economic affairs in the administration of President Bill Clinton and principal economic adviser to Clinton's 1992 campaign, told AlterNet. "Every investment is based on an assessment of the likely future demand for whatever you're investing in, and how much it's going to cost to produce it. So there are assumptions about labor costs, material costs and other input costs - and again, about demand." Assumptions for the economy, for the reminder of the Trump term, does not appear to be so sunny.
Kearney company announces mass layoffs impacting more than 60 employees. Posted: Aug 20, 2026 / 02:32 PM CDT Updated: Aug 20, 2026 / 02:32 PM CDT KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A Kearney company announced Thursday morning that it will be laying off dozens of employees. Cornerstone Building Brands, Inc. said 61 employees will be laid off from its Kearney facility at 303 West Major Street, according to the WARN Notice. The site is best known as Ply Gem, which makes vinyl siding and accessories. "The reduction in force is expected to be permanent, and there will not be any bumping rights for the affected employees," the notice says. All affected employees have been notified, according to the company. The affected employees are not represented by a union. The layoffs will take effect on or around Oct. 19, the notice says.
Cornerstone Building faces wage-and-hour abuse claims after judge denies dismissal bid. A federal judge denied an exterior building products manufacturer's bid to dismiss a lawsuit alleging the company engaged in wage-and-hour abuses against its hourly-paid or non-exempt employees in Washington. Cornerstone Building Brands Services Inc., a North Carolina-based manufacturer with offices throughout the United States, faces a civil lawsuit filed by Margeaux Hesterly, a former hourly-paid, non-exempt field service coordinator at the company's Spokane, Washington, facility. Hesterly alleges that during her roughly three years with the company, she experienced what she describes as various wage-and-hour violations, including "non-compliant meal and rest breaks, off-the-clock work, unpaid or underpaid overtime, sick leave violations and personnel file violations." Former Employee Alleges Unpaid Work, Break and Overtime Violations According to court documents, Hesterly states that while she was often scheduled to work Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., she ended up working "significantly more hours in the evenings, on the weekends and during her legally protected breaks." She also alleges that she was routinely interrupted during meal breaks and was told to work during breaks at the request of her supervisor. In all, Hesterly makes the following claims that Cornerstone failed to: * Provide rest breaks; * Provide meal breaks; * Pay minimum wages for all hours worked; * Pay overtime wages due; * Accrue and allow use of paid sick leave; * Pay all wages due at termination; * Maintain accurate payroll records; and * Provide personnel file records. Cornerstone filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit on April 16, arguing that Hesterly failed to sufficiently allege that she performed compensable work or that the company knew of or willfully committed the alleged wage-and-hour violations. The company also contended that she had not identified a uniform, class-wide policy supporting her claims and had failed to exhaust administrative remedies related to her personnel file allegations. Court Rejects Dismissal Arguments, Allows Class Claims to Proceed In his denial of Cornerstone's dismissal motion, United States District Judge Thomas O. Rice rejects Cornerstone's argument that Hesterly had to show her unpaid work was "integral and indispensable" to her job duties. He states that Washington law does not appear to incorporate the federal Portal-to-Portal Act standard, which amended the Fair Labor Standards Act by excluding certain preliminary and postliminary activities from compensable work time under federal law. Judge Rice also found that Hesterly had sufficiently alleged that Cornerstone knew about the uncompensated time. He further allowed Hesterly's willfulness claims to proceed, citing allegations that Cornerstone placed work expectations upon her that were impossible to complete within the time allotted, disciplined her when she was unable to meet those expectations or when she attempted to work overtime hours, and required her to work during unpaid meal periods. 1 comment. * Steven B. "This launch is about making it easier for dealers to do business with us," says Pete Placido, vice president of Sales, Dealer Channel at Cornerstone Building Brands. "By offering Simonton products through Paradigm Vendo, we are giving dealers and contractors a simpler, more consistent way to quote and sell in the home, helping them move faster, serve customers better, and grow with confidence." Product lines such as SoftLite and Harvey Building Products are already available in Paradigm Vendo and have seen strong adoption among Cornerstone Building Brands dealers. Adding the Simonton Madeira and Daylight Max series expands that offering and gives dealers access to more of the products customers are looking for.
