About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of hands-on software engineering experience, including a track record of leading at staff or principal level on high-scale products.
  • Expert-level Node.js and TypeScript skills, with strong frontend experience in React and/or Angular; experience with both is a significant plus.
  • Deep experience designing and operating distributed, real-time systems in production, continuously and under load.
  • Strong data engineering instincts, including SQL/NoSQL, event-driven architectures, and analytical stores such as BigQuery or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience building or shipping AI/ML-powered features in production, such as personalization, recommendations, search, or generative AI.
  • Fluency in at least one of the company’s three commercial pillars—eCommerce, Marketing, or Media—and enough fluency across the other two to contribute credibly from day one.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Excellent judgment in balancing scope, speed, performance, and user experience, with strong product intuition.
  • Clear, calm communication, strong writing, thoughtful pushback, and the ability to make colleagues more effective.

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end architecture of the platform across backend, frontend, data, AI, and real-time systems.
  • Drive engineering standards for code quality, testing, observability, security, and operational excellence across the team.
  • Mentor engineers and grow the organization’s technical depth.
  • Design and implement services and features end-to-end, from database to user interface, with high performance and responsiveness.
  • Build rapid prototypes from start to finish.
  • Personally tackle high-risk, high-impact problems involving live video reliability, real-time engagement, commerce integrations, and AI-powered experiences.
  • Evolve the technology stack, including React, Angular, Node.js, TypeScript, Google Cloud Platform, Firebase, Firestore, Cloud Functions, BigQuery, and Pub/Sub.
  • Architect for global, 24/7 live operations, considering uptime, latency, cost, and graceful degradation during peak live events.
  • Build systems for business-to-business-to-consumer scale, serving enterprise customers and consumer audiences across multiple regions and languages.
  • Partner with Product and Data on experimentation infrastructure so meaningful changes can be A/B tested and measured.
  • Partner with Product and Design from concept through launch, taking ownership in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Represent engineering with strategic customers and partners on technical topics and translate customer needs into architectural decisions.
  • Improve the engineering team through design reviews, technical writing, mentorship, and hiring.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform services such as Firebase, Cloud Functions, Firestore, Realtime Database, and Pub/Sub.
  • Experience with commerce platforms such as Shopify or WooCommerce, and/or live video or streaming infrastructure.
