About the job

Requirements
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent is required.
  • A programming languages background and experience with formal methods.
  • Hands-on experience developing software and applying formal verification techniques.
  • Familiarity with model checking, theorem proving, program analysis, and formal semantics of programming languages, with demonstrated expertise in at least one such area.
  • Experience in all aspects of software engineering practices.
  • Fluency in Haskell or other functional programming languages, including executable formal specifications.
  • Ability to work well with customers, including building rapport, identifying needs, and communicating through written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to self-manage deadlines and quality goals.
  • U.S. citizenship is required because only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Responsibilities
  • Gather requirements by engaging clients in discussions where each iteration refines their needs and leads to suggested ways to meet those needs.
  • Construct high-level architectural descriptions of software systems and deeper program designs by developing architecture prototypes, determining where and how formal methods should be applied.
  • Extend design prototypes through to finished products, ensuring robustness and ease of use.
  • Use theorem provers and model checkers to demonstrate or analyze desired security and correctness properties of systems.
  • Construct and regularly conduct system, unit, and regression tests, and conduct semi-formal validation and verification.
  • Conduct speculative research and development of cutting-edge technology and incorporate it into product prototypes.
  • Develop, design, implement, and maintain technical infrastructure tools for internal use and library code shared among projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • An MS or PhD in computer science or a related field.
  • Direct experience developing high-assurance systems and/or security products.
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering tools, with expertise in SysML and AADL.
  • Knowledge of hardware engineering languages and platforms such as VHDL, Chisel, Bluespec, SystemVerilog, and Verilog.

About the company

Galois applies formal methods and functional programming to build trust in critical systems used in aerospace, defense, government, fintech, and healthcare. Its work focuses on proving software and hardware behave correctly through mathematical proofs, not just tests, using tools like Cryptol for cryptographic specifications and SAW for verification. The company translates research into real-world technology for agencies and industry partners and spins out specialized companies to commercialize its innovations, while remaining employee-owned. Its goal is to deliver verifiable, high-assurance software and hardware for safety- and mission-critical applications.

What believers are saying

  • DARPA's $12.6 million COOP award validates Galois's continuous-correctness platform through April 2026.
  • On March 31, 2026, Galois released an AADL Library for SysMLv2 with Collins Aerospace.
  • In January 2026, CAMET became free for ten users, widening adoption and upsell.

What critics are saying

  • Galois depends on government customers; COOP ended April 2026, forcing replacement revenue.
  • Free CAMET undercuts recurring license revenue unless Enterprise sales quickly offset losses.
  • If DARPA and ARPA-H funding dries up, Galois becomes an endangered services boutique.

What makes Galois unique

  • Galois still sells mathematical proofs for critical systems, not testing, as of August 2026.
  • Its 2026 AI-for-formal-methods stack targets legacy code, specification generation, and Rust transpilation.
  • The company keeps spinning out niche businesses, including ExistX and Niobium Microsystems.
