Requirements
  • Personal, first-hand experience as a recipient of the mental health system, such as psychiatric inpatient hospitalization, outpatient services or therapy, psychiatric medications, or community mental health groups; a formal diagnosis is not required.
  • Must become a Certified Peer Specialist or complete the Core Elements of Young Adult Peer Mentoring training within six months of hire.
  • Must become a Certified Peer Specialist within one year of hire.
  • One year of experience working with youth and young adults.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver's license must be presented at employment; incumbents must be at least 21 years old, have held a valid United States driver's license for at least one year, pass a driver's screening background check, maintain a safe driving record, and maintain adequate insurance when using a personal vehicle.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, climb, lift at least 25 pounds using proper lifting techniques or a two-person lift, assist clients with daily living tasks, and communicate with clients, staff, and external representatives.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and office equipment and possess the specified visual abilities and mobility needed to navigate stairs, narrow spaces, and hallways.
  • CPR certification is required within two weeks of hire.
  • First Aid certification is required within two weeks of hire.
  • NET certification is required.
  • Certified Peer Specialist credential is required within 12 months of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Support youth and young adults in engaging with services, supports, and community activities while promoting self-determination and shifting decision-making to them.
  • Support youth and young adults through educational, vocational, relationship, housing, and other transitions into adult roles according to their goals.
  • Welcome new youth and young adults to services and Access Center activities and provide ongoing engagement and support.
  • Share personal experiences and provide non-directive support, coaching, and modeling to improve service engagement and access to services, providers, recovery tools, and resources.
  • Provide individual peer mentoring to 5-10 youth and young adults using the Young Adult Peer Mentoring Practice Profile.
  • Provide core staffing during Access Center drop-in hours and staff activities and events to support full participation.
  • Collaborate with TIP Facilitators and Access Center staff to welcome visitors, offer peer support, and orient them to available services.
  • Facilitate regular peer support groups on topics relevant to youth and young adults in a non-judgmental, open, and mutual environment.
  • Assist the Peer Leadership Coordinator and Access Center staff in recruiting for and supporting the Young Adult Leadership Council.
  • Help plan events and training opportunities for staff, youth and young adults, and the community based on identified needs.
  • Conduct outreach and marketing to educate youth and young adults and community stakeholders about programs and services, including direct outreach and creation and distribution of marketing materials.
  • Attend community events and activities to engage youth and young adults and explain available benefits and supports.
  • Assist Access Center leadership, clinicians, and TIP Facilitators in identifying and accessing services and service providers that benefit youth and young adults.
  • Help youth and young adults develop supportive relationships and community connections.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and wellness practices, including addressing substance use.
  • Support development of self-sufficiency and positive employment behaviors.
  • Help youth and young adults identify needs and goals related to education, employment, family relationships, spirituality, and social recreation and integrate them into service planning.
  • Help youth and young adults communicate and work effectively with service providers, employers, natural supports, family members, and others.
  • Help youth and young adults develop life skills, find their voice, and identify and use their strengths.
  • Use Gathering and Inspiring Future Talent, Wellness Recovery Action Plan, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and other evidence-informed or evidence-based models as trained.
  • Use lived experience purposefully and in a strengths-based way to promote discovery and recovery.
  • Inspire hope and future focus in youth and young adults.
  • Attend in-service trainings and staff meetings.
  • Help youth and young adults develop self-advocacy skills individually and in groups.
  • Serve as a bridge between child or young adult-serving mental health systems on behalf of youth and young adults.
  • Maximize choices, self-determination, participation, and decision-making in service planning, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
  • Provide crisis intervention when needed.
  • Collaborate with Access Center staff and other area Access Centers to deliver services under the Access Center Program Director's leadership.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
