Requirements
  • An MD or DO medical degree and a verified State of California medical license from the Medical Board of California.
  • Board certification in Aerospace Medicine or a related specialty such as Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, or Family Medicine.
  • Federal Aviation Administration Senior Aviation Medical Examiner designation.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification.
  • Basic Life Support Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Certification by the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation.
  • Completion of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Spirometry Course.
  • Certification and registration as a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Medical Examiner.
  • Extensive hospital or inpatient experience with proficiency in patient assessment, vital signs monitoring, and medical records management.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record systems such as Epic or similar platforms.
  • Hands-on proficiency in airway management, suturing, intravenous infusion, and wound care.
Responsibilities
  • Provide expert medical evaluations, including NASA First, Second, and Third Class Aviation Medical Exams, Federal Aviation Administration First, Second, and Third Class medical certification exams, NASA Qualified Non-crewmember certification, and other duties consistent with the doctor position qualifications.
  • Develop and implement health and wellness plans tailored to the demands of spaceflight environments.
  • Manage medical emergencies using advanced airway management, trauma care, and acute pain management techniques.
  • Oversee the use of Electronic Health Record systems such as Epic to document patient data accurately and securely in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Conduct clinical research related to aerospace medicine, including studies on physiology, radiation therapy effects, and neurocritical care.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams on discharge planning, post-acute care, and rehabilitation strategies for astronauts returning from missions.
  • Support telehealth initiatives for remote medical consultations and triage during space missions or ground operations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Current Procedural Terminology coding and International Classification of Diseases coding.
  • Critical care experience, including neurocritical care, trauma medicine, or intensive care unit experience.
  • Knowledge of physiology principles relevant to aerospace environments, including cardiology, pulmonology, endocrinology, immunology, and sleep medicine.
