Power Systems EngineeringConfirmed live in the last 24 hours
Full-timeColumbus, OH, USAIn-person

About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of industrial or commercial engineering experience in mission-critical facilities, including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
  • A bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience developing solutions and executing plans on complex projects.
  • Experience performing complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions and presenting the justification to management in a high-level review.
  • Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide full life-cycle engineering support to AWS data center Power Generation Systems, from design inception through commissioning, operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as the senior engineering resource for technical advice on power generation technologies, including diesel generators, natural gas and gas turbine systems, fuel cells, Battery Energy Storage Systems, and emerging technologies such as Small Modular Reactors.
  • Lead troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective action documentation for power generation system failures and Site Impairment Events.
  • Support operational issues through ad hoc training, complex operating procedure reviews, and critical event support for power generation equipment.
  • Interface with internal data center design engineering, server hardware, environmental health and safety, and controls teams to promote consistent and reliable power generation service standards.
  • Work on concurrent projects across multiple geographical regions.
  • Initiate and lead engineering audits, including on-site visits at owned or collocated data centers, and produce reports outlining risks and recommended mitigations and remediations.
  • Act as resident engineer during new construction projects and support construction, commissioning, and turnover of power generation systems.
  • Serve as Single Threaded Owner for critical power generation investigations, driving resolution of open cases and reducing service-level agreement non-compliance across the fleet.
  • Assist with regulatory compliance and reporting related to air quality, emissions permitting, fuel storage, and spill prevention.
  • Serve as the senior technical lead for global power generation failure investigations, partnering with DCEO, IRQ, and vendors to establish root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Own and drive Power Generation System performance programs, analyze fleet-wide trends, and develop scalable solutions.
  • Develop and optimize preventive maintenance strategies targeting the highest AFR to reduce unplanned failures during initial deployments, and lead global fuel system quality and reliability programs.
  • Lead emissions compliance programs, supporting air quality permitting, fuel storage regulations, and spill prevention plans with construction, operations, and environmental teams.
  • Develop and deliver technical training programs for DCEO and FE teams on power generation systems and supporting equipment, building regional expertise and knowledge across local teams.
  • Provide senior engineering support for AWS investments in fuel cells, Battery Energy Storage Systems, hybrid power generation, and future technologies such as Small Modular Reactors to reduce commissioning delays and integration challenges.
  • Supervise and validate generator vendor activities, including startup, commissioning, and maintenance; manage specialized power generation consultants and work with the reliability team to manage vendor quality and service-level agreement compliance.
  • Prioritize daily activities to support data center capacity availability and safety, focusing on high-impact actions, and work on local and global projects.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of regional building codes and regulations.
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration and development into deployment or mass production.
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
  • Experience with multiple power generation technologies, including diesel generators, natural gas and gas turbine systems, fuel cells, Battery Energy Storage Systems, and/or emerging technologies such as Small Modular Reactors.
  • Experience as a resident engineer, hands-on power generation design consultant, or owner's engineer, and ability to carry design concepts through exploration and development into deployment at scale.
  • Deep understanding of environmental regulations related to diesel emissions, fuel storage, spill prevention, and air permit compliance.
  • Understanding of electromagnetic induction, alternator operation, and three-phase power generation, including voltage regulation and field current control.
  • Experience with generator synchronization, load management, paralleling operations, and automatic transfer switch systems.
  • Experience with power generation systems load testing, commissioning procedures, and acceptance testing.
  • Registered Professional Engineer and/or an advanced degree in engineering, business, or a related field.
  • Fluent knowledge of continuously operating redundant electrical systems, including uninterruptible power supplies, AC/DC conversion, diesel generator systems, and complex power distribution arrangements.

Sells products online and rents cloud computing

Amazon runs the largest online store in the United States and rents cloud computing to businesses and governments through Amazon Web Services. AWS pioneered renting computing power over the internet, and Amazon built its own delivery network to get orders to customers quickly. Shoppers buy from Amazon and from independent sellers on its store, and Prime members pay a subscription for fast free shipping, streaming video and music, and other perks. AWS rents out computing power, storage, databases, and AI tools so companies can run software without owning servers, and Amazon also makes Kindle e-readers and Echo speakers with the Alexa assistant.
