Requirements
  • High school or GED graduation is required.
  • Level I requires certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures applicable to the work performed is required.
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special patient treatments is required.
  • Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, basic health and safety precautions, infection control procedures, and safety precautions applicable to a clinic setting is required.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions is required.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting and transport stretcher and wheelchair patients may be required.
  • Ability to document and communicate pertinent information is required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff is required.
  • Typing skills and knowledge of medical terminology are required.
  • Level II requires at least 1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
  • Level III requires at least 3 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
  • Applicants for Levels II and III must meet the requirements of the Medical Assistant, Certified (CMA/RMA) Ladder Program document.
Responsibilities
  • Answer telephones and greet patients.
  • Update and file patient medical records.
  • Complete insurance forms and handle correspondence.
  • Schedule appointments.
  • Arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Handle billing and bookkeeping.
  • Take medical histories and record vital signs.
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Assist physicians and nursing staff during examinations and procedures.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens.
  • Perform basic laboratory tests on the premises.
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies and sterilize medical instruments.
  • Promote patient and family understanding of educational content and involvement in the plan of care, and document this in the patient record.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
  • Authorize drug refills as directed and telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy.
  • Draw blood.
  • Prepare patients for X-rays, tests, and procedures.
  • Take electrocardiograms.
  • Remove sutures and staples.
  • Change sterile and non-sterile dressings.
  • Complete daily clinic preparation, including registration, scheduling, charge posting, and order entry.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program is strongly preferred for Level I.
  • Graduation from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited medical assistant program is strongly preferred for Levels II and III.
